I can sadly say that I have never heard James Jamerson. Where can I hear him? I know he was in Motown, but none of my local stores have any of their CD's. Anyone have links to tracks with James' playing?

The easist to find whole albums and some of his best playing is on Marvin Gaye's later albums - well worth owning as well - not just for the bass playing!! ;)

...and pick up the book/cds of Standing In The Shadows Of Motown.
    Guaranteed to improve your playing!

But that won't help with the original question :

"Where can I hear him?I know he was in Motown, but none of my local stores have any of their CD's" ;)

I think Marvin Gaye's albums are the easiest to find in record stores etc. and they actually credit Jamerson with playing bass as well!! :meh:
  9. Yeah my pops just showed me that he had this. Pretty cool stuff.

Nearly all of the listed performances are still available on cd. Most music stores will order it for you if they don't stock it. Other resources would be... Barnes and Noble, (they'll order any cd for you) or Amazon.com.

There are lists of the many albums he plays on online. Just google his name.

I love his work on "Signed Sealed and Delivered" (the whole cd), but that's a drop in the bucket really.

There's a radio station here in LA that I can't listen to anymore because they play the same playlist over and over but I'd bet at least half the songs they play have Jamerson on bass. (krth 101)

Oops, I just noticed that your across the pond, actually I'd have no idea if these are available in GB. Maybe Amazon ships overseas? I do know that they're available because I've been buying a lot of his work lately. Supremes, Jackson 5, 4 Tops, Stevie Wonder, Miracles.... and on and on. It's all still out there.

That particular tune(Stevie's version) is Babbitt...or so I thought.
  16. Yes, it is Babbitt, some people get those two mixed up don't they!

So out of that impressive list of songs pick 3 where Jamerson's bass line made the biggest impression on you :)

    1. Heard it through the grape vine
    2. I can't get next to you
    3. Whats goin on

1-Get the book Standing in the Shadows of Motown. It's not Jamerson himself, but many bassists playing his lines.

2- get Hitsville USA 1959-1971, a 4 CD box set that documents Motown's Detroit period, to which Jamerson was a major contributor. You can get it online...

3- tune in on your local oldies radio station. When they play a hit by an early Motown act, there's a Pretty good chance Jamerson was the bassist.
  19. 1. I was Made To Love Her - Stevie Wonder
    2. Bernadette - 4 Tops
    3. My Mistake - Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross (I believe)

My Mistake is not on the list, but it's definitly Jamerson.

I love that triplet thing he does, and after watching Standing In the Shadows, I'm stunned that he did all of that with one finger

Yeah, just turn on your radio and find the oldies station and he'll be on sooner or later.
