Ok folks, my basses are worth thousands of £ when I add the values up, so I need an amp that reflects this. I used to use my MAG250 1x15 combo with an ABM 4x8 extension cab. I am currently using a Peavey 696F powered mixer to power two ABM 4x8s, sometimes in stereo mode, sometimes in mono. I've been told using a mixer is a bad idea, and I should buy a quality power amp, and a quality pre amp.

I've noticed a few Peavey power amps for sale on ebay for good prices, and as for pre amps, the POD X3, Sansamp PSA-1, RBI etc look interesting. I still want to keep the 4x8s as I love their punchy tone and portability. SUGGESTIONS PLEAAAAAASE!

Well I perform to different size audiences but nearly always with PA support. I do however like the sound of a loud rig. I've got a fair bit to blow on the rig. I was chatting to a Sound engineer I know, and he suggested keeping my current Peavey 696F powered Mixer, as althought it IS a mixer and therefore has a lot of extra weight, it is also a damn good reliable power amp kicking out 300 watts a side at 8ohms and 600 watts a side at 4ohms. So, his suggestion was:

    POD X3
    Graphic Equalizer
    Peavey 696F
    Two Ashdowm 4x8s.

    Thoughts on this rig?
