i am going to build a five string bass (or at least try). i have this curly maple that i want to use for it. it's two pieces and i was going to matchbook them together. the problem it that it is only 3/4" thick. Will it work well if I glue 2 planks to the back to make it twice as thick?

You mean.. bookmatch? If you bookmatch it, it'll be thin, but usable. You can have a few more veneers under it to increase the thickness if you want.

Most bodies are 1,75" thick, so you'll need a bit more wood for the back.
