First of all, I'm pretty dumb when it comes to pedals so bear with me here. I just joined a punk rock/hardcore band and all I have is a really nice bass and a really nice amp. I've yet to buy any pedals and I'd like to know what I probably need before I buy any. If I had to compare my band to any other bands A Day To Remember would be the best because we're trying to make our sound similar to theirs. I was thinking for starters a tuner pedal and filter pedal are important. I also heard that some pedals aren't necessary if your amp has them. My amp (other than the basics) has knobs for bright, contour, drive, level, and then a button for overdrive (beneath the drive and level knobs). I want to take this band seriously so I want to get the right pedals for whenever we start playing gigs. Btw I'm not rich so don't suggest getting seven different types of pedals I just want the basics. I'm thinking tuner, filter, comp, and overdrive? (Overdrive because I'm not sure about my amp) Thank you!

  2. start with tuner. then, i'd just go off of what YOU think you need. generic answer? yep, but it's accurate.

then ask yourself what you think you could add. if you have clean guitar parts, a chorus is great under that. if you get trippy, a phaser or flanger is cool. get funky? maybe an envelope or wah.

does your amp have distortion or eq that is footswitchable? if not, you may want to get some dirt of some kind in there or grab an eq if you want a tone shape that you can bypass.

hope that helped direct you at least a little. then you can start narrowing down what you need by budget and features and such.

You don't NEED any effects. That said, if you want to experiment, I would get a compressor and a fuzz pedal (Big Muff Pi) first. For what you are playing, you can get a lot of great tones with just those 2. You might also want to consider an overdrive after that.

(I just realized I may get excommunicated from the effects forum for heresy...)

Yeah, like said above, if you have a footswitch for overdrive, you might not want or need a pedal, but there are plenty of great ones, if budget is a factor, the hardwire cm2 is the best for the price, or if you're real strapped, Joyo American! A tuner is a must, compressor not so much, they are cool though!!

johnk vintage guitars site has a ton of overdrive reviews for bass and sound clips, ovnilabs is the bible for compressor reviews, and other gear stuff!! If you don't mind, what kind of sounds will you be using the filter for playing hardcore??

I suggest looking at used pedals , check a used music shop, pawn shop or even Craig's list. You probably can find a tuner for under 25 and pickup a used boss bass overdrive , you can find a used one for under 50 sometimes. Start there then add as you go. You do not need to have everything to play in a band.

My amp doesn't have a foot switch for anything. You can yell at me for being stupid later but I'm honestly not sure what kind of sounds I'd be using the filter for. I want pedals that will allow me to get a poppy sound or a heavy sound which would probably be EQ. I want one to make my notes even (Comp pedal) and I also want to throw more power into my bass with an OD pedal. I don't want distortion or fuzz because I like my mids more than the sound of those two. I'm pretty stupid when it comes to pedals.

well, I'm not like some people on TB, so I won't yell!! Filters are normally for bootsy collins/funky sounds, if you don't know what it does, you probably don't need it!!

a good mild overdrive like the ones I mentioned can be found very cheap, they will help you sit in the mix better with heavy guitars, and the cm2 actually boosts midrange to my ears

I got my cm2 for $50 used and the hardwire valve distortion for $20, both amazing!! Joyo American go for $30-40 new

and for evenness of sound, just practice good techniques, I used my comps different than most... My dual band comp is now used to bring the low end down on one of my basses, my boss limiter is only for my envelope filter, which I use for 3 different sounds
edit: stop belittling yourself, ever hear of self fulfilling prophecy?? Don't be so harsh on yourself... I've been playing for 20 years and finally learned how to do my own setups a few years ago, you can't know everything!!

Oh yeah, overdrive will naturally compress your sound anyways, so you really might wanna wait on getting a compressor

Yeah I'll for sure look into that hardwire cm2 it sounds pretty neat. So I guess all I really need other than a tuner pedal is an EQ and OD. At least that's what it looks like so far. Keeping in mind the fact that I play heavy and hardcore music for the most part.

if you have a good amp, why do you want a eq?? Does it have an Xlr or direct out?? If so, the only reason you'd want an eq would be for a different tone... Now if your amp doesn't have the xlr, I suggest getting a preamp/DI like a dark glass B7K or Vintagemicrotubes deluxe, very important for live use, and then you might not need an overdrive pedal either as they both have drive

I was thinking EQ because pretty much everyone has an EQ and because I don't wanna have to turn the knobs on my amp every time I wanna change the tone (Doesn't an EQ make it easier?). I'm not sure though. My amp is a fender rumble 200 so you would have to look at the specs

Well, if you want a different tone, eq pedal is the way to go

Really though, do yourself a favor and check out darkglass demos on YouTube, their versatile, but Excel in heavier music, plus DI still works when pedal is disengaged, so you could have your amp your clean tone and kick on the dark glass for rockin parts
