I got a huge steal on an Ampeg Rig (SVT 4 Pro Head, Svt-15en and 410hlf cabs, plus a Furman Pl-Plus and Dbx 266xl) for 1200.

However, i am incredibly disappointed with the tone I get out of the head.

I am looking for a pure, warm, and jazzy tone, seeing that I am in a group whose style is tempered in Jazz.

The ampeg head just doesnt give me that sound.

I am currently selling it, and am looking at a few options.

A friend suggested, if I had the money, invest in an Orange AD2000B, but that might be well out of my range, and there are few places on earth with this thing in stock for me to try it out.

A cheaper alternative is the Sunn 300T, or perhaps an Eden piece.

I am also a big fan of old Ampeg and Trace Elliot pieces.

I prefer an all tube head, and some better cabs.

What would you guys suggest I invest in for a full rig?

Im not looking for the 1200 watts the ampeg gives me, I want a creamy, rich tone, somewhat like what Sting gets in his newer releases.

But I want it to be versatile enough for me to funk things up a bit.

  2. My Vtype preamp works great, simple but effective EQ options, compressor, overdrive, very nice.... The old SMX series are great too, very flexible indeed.
