I would suggest the P bass ... its an instrument you can keep with you for the rest of your days as a bassist if you choose to. Great tone in just about any situation, truly plug and play. - Tom
Ditto - P basses have always served me well... I bought a MIM P bass back in '92, played TONS of gigs with it, and it still looks, plays, and sounds great - it's provided me with one heckuva value... I recently bought another MIM P bass made around the same time frame - and although not as well cared for as "mine", it's still a good instrument...BTW, I've only got around $125 into the latest MIM - I painted the body and pickguard, spent less than $1 on new screws - and the thing look like new... - georgestrings
