Why buy an active/passive if you're not going to use the preamp?
I would totally do this if I loved the bass overall and liked its passive tone. There are certain active/passive Yamaha basses that have interested me that I'd probably never put a batter into.
@Salsa what bass did you pick up if you don't mind me asking?
If you are going to put a battery in, you may want to make sure the batter contact clip is clean. A pencil eraser is pretty handy for cleaning them.
The OP's situation is the opposite, he's not putting a battery in. Good to know about the pencil eraser though.
G&L L2000 comes to mind, perfectly viable to use it passive only since controls are passive anyways, and the active "preamp" is basically a buffer or a buffer with boosted treble.
Hello, I bought a new Fender American Ultra Precision Bass. I needed the P Bass and Jazz Bass pickups (like two basses in one), and like you said, it doesn't come in passive.
The bass I wanted (P and Jazz Bass pickups) only comes in active/passive, and I like the passive sound (Fender American Ultra Precision Bass). I tried the fender performer PJ bass (P and jazz bass pickups) but it had Yosemite pickups which I do not like.

Makes sense if you just like that passive tone, but are considering later resale or want the option of having active tone at your disposal.

That said, I have an American Fender Precision Deluxe that has batteries in it, but is almost never switched to active, so I get it.

I have a bass with active/passive switch and never use it passive.
And nowadays, there are aftermarket options like the Fishman Universal Rechargeable Battery Pack so you don't need to always have 9-volts on hand. Universal Rechargeable Battery Pack - Fishman
From my experience, you theoretically shouldn't need a battery if a bass has an active preamp (with passive bypass) and passive pickups. If a bass has active pickups, then you totally need a battery.

I'm assuming you have an active/passive bass. If it was just active and you had no battery, you would have no output.
My L2K ran without a battery in it for almost 20 years. The only thing you might pay attention to is the knobs on the preamp - over a very long period of time, the pots can become a little scratchy, especially where the wipers sit if you never ever touch the knobs like I did.
My Carvins I ran without batteries too and I just turned the knobs all the way in the "down" position. That way the wipers sat in a totally unimportant area in the pot, so if any corrosion occurred in the fully off position, who cares.
That may be a little anal, but doesn't hurt to just turn the knobs all the way down and leave them.
