he was on line with his family a few steps behind me, taking the 7 a.m. red-eye out of vegas. he was a lot shorter than i expected.
That's cool. I met Phil, Bobby and Billy one day...I used to work at a record store and they dropped by for a visit while on tour. Phil was a nice guy...Bobby was a complete tweak.
Awesome, man! I've met Bobby a couple of times after shows, but he was always being rushed to the bus by his bouncer. He smiled and waved to all of us though. And a friend of mine delivered a pizza in Frisco to Bill Graham's free clinic; he talked to the customer for about ten minutes before he realized that it was Phil Lesh!
I just read his new (band) autobiography "Searching for the Sound". Very good read, I highly recommend it.
the cool thing was that i had just seen him play at vegoose so i gave him the standard "great show at vegoose, phil!" then i called a bunch of my friends and was yelling into the phone "you won't believe it, but i'm on line with phil lesh." he was only a few people behind me so i'm sure he heard me but so what, he probably used to it. i wanted a picture, but it being 5:30 in the morning i didn't want to push it. i met mike gordon at bonnaroo this year, so i've been graced by some bass gods in '05. sweet!
I hear Lesh is a really strange guy, especially if hold a conversation with'em. Supposedly, he's very detached. Who knows though?
I met Lesh on his birthday last year at a bookstore. I still haven't had the pictures done yet. I will soon and post them, but I think I have some good ones.
Last year my almost brother in law repaired the Leslie cabs for "the Dead" shortly before they went on. He's not much of a Grateful Dead fan, so this is what I got: "yeah, I talked to one of the band guys... he was pretty cool, bass player, I think..." Since he did try out the cabs with their organs, while there were people in the venue, I did let him know that he opened for "the Dead." I bumped into the Ultimate Warrior in one airport and I was right behind Mary Lou Retton in another airport.
Nah, he was wearing a jean jacket with fringey things all over it. It was around 1988 I was coming out of the bathroom, he was going in. I remember my face hitting his chest and I was in my dress greens. I got quite the giggle out of it about a minute or so later after I realized who it was.
