I'm not sure about this yet, but I've been doing some research and think Roscoe might be the bass for me. Initially I fell in love with the look of the LG-3005 (the model I would get), and read lots about their tone, but haven't heard them extensively first hand, especially in a band setting. I'm hoping you guys can provide some links to good quality sound clips (solo), recommend some recordings in which the bassist uses a Roscoe, and tell me what you love about your Roscoe. The other bass I have my eye on is an F-Bass BN5, although it would cost me at least another $1000+, assuming I could pick up a used Roscoe for $1500-$2K, is it worth it? Seems like Keith Roscoe's builds are already such an artform, how could it get much better? Just looking for opinions and advice, thanks everyone.
Im getting an Fbass.. I played a few yesterday, the tone and feel made every other bass I have ever played feel like a toy. Kwesi, as you know, is getting his new one, so PM him for sound clips and the info you need.
Sadly, no. I played both of Tom Bowlus' Fbass, but no Roscoes were present. I just loved the Fbass.. I have some videos of me playing them, but they arent up quite yet. If you would like them as a sound sample, just let me know. Also, PM Darkstrike. He is a big Roscoe fan, and super cool. Hell give you anything you want.
Yeah, I'd love to check out the vids, and I'll definitely see if Dark can provide me some confidence about my Roscoe fantasies. Was it a BN5 you played?
Alright. When I get the videos up, Ill be sure to PM them to you. And yes, Dark is super smooth. Hell hook you up with whatever. Keep an eye on the Classifieds too! Lots of stuff shows up in there.
Thanks DW, I stumbled upon this vid the other day and had a level 8 GAS attack. Love the slap tone! I still need to find a clip that showcases the fingerstyle tone and some band examples where the bassist is grooving with a Roscoe so I can really hear how it sits in the mix.
Thanks Freddles. I'm usually so stuck in the basses and amps sections I completely forgot about Roscoe-land. Still looking for input from owners and comparisons to the BN5.
As Freddels said there is a thread in the Roscoe forum that is titled Roscoe Sound Clips. There are several clips of Different Roscoes in the thread but VroomVroom(Jerry) has clips of his Roscoes both solo and in a band setting. You can check them out and hear a lot of the differences. God Bless, Ray
You wouldn't be disappointed with either the Roscoe or F Bass. I'd say my Roscoe has a little bit "tighter" sound, punchy in the mids but still plenty of bottom. The F Bass seems to have an overall "fuller" tone, rich in overtones from top to bottom. Now, I'm sure the wood and electronics of each impact the tone of these particular basses. The construction, fit and finish, sound, and playability of both brands are the absolute best. I like the smaller size of the Roscoe. The Roscoe has a thuya top on ash, and the F BAss is buckeye burl on ash. Oh, you want a couple pics? OK, here. here's the F Bass after I modded it for more tone control.
Wow! Thanks for that Munji I'm a fan of smaller body sizes as well. What's the weight difference between the two?
Munji, damn man, I almost spit coffee all over my monitor! Ideal, as everyone else has already pointed out, there is a great deal of info down on the Roscoe Forum, and if there is anything at all I can help you with, please just shoot me a PM or e-mail and I will be happy to help out. FWIW, I really dig George's work too, different from what we do, but incredible. He's a really nice guy too.
Owning both I have to agree that you can't go wrong with either! Theyre both beautiful, well constructed, amazing playing basses. The neck profiles are somewhat similair so I can switch between both without much adjustment. I would say the roscoe has a bigger bottom and more of a punchy p bass thing going on with the barts while the F has the refined J vibe. The F preamp is also boost only and has a passive tone control while the roscoes have a variety of pups/pre's/ and body woods allowing for a spectrum of roscoe flavors.
