OMG! I wa sjust in the muzzzik store, decided to try some Fenders, I tried a J-Bass, and P-Bass. J-Bass was OK, and so was the P. I suddenly noticed a sting ray, and becuase hear you guys going on about it, I decided to plug it in. It was an "Old Sting Ray" according to the tag.. I think it has a Music Man 5.. not sure at all, but when I plugged that baby in, I automatically fell in LOVE. I even made the attendent's mouth drop The slap and poping is so damn sweet ! And the finish was perfect. It was just the umm, mable finish(?) (no paint) Just a glossy finish *drools* It was only £296 which I guess is good becuase the "new" Sting Ray was 1000. OMG I love that bass!!!! But I'm not allowd another guitar until possible next year
Go for it! If you like the sound and feel of the bass go for it! No one can tell you what to get or anything so if you like it go for it! I sent my money for my Zon and I am anxiously waiting for that.
When you're thirteen like he is, I imagine your parents have a good amount of control over your spending habits.
I'm with you man. I tried a stingray 5 fretless last Friday at GC and I'm still dreaming about it. Piezo, Pau ferro fingerboard, it must be mine!!!!!!! Don't feel too bad, I'm alledgedly a responsible adult and I can't get whatever basss I want either -utilities housing, food, damn student loans, etc. I'll get it sooner or later though, just like you will.
I hate to be the voice of dissent in this crowd, but I cant help but think that the OLD is actually an OLP?? Either way, go for it Sneak out of the house, and alope with your new bass I too have fallen in love with the Stingray OLP's, and soon, I will have one.. with a SD MM pickup and tone circut installled
i know i'll probably be quite unpopular after saying thi (not that any of u knew me anyway) but i really don't like sting rays. after reading all the time how much u all liked them i went to my lacal muzik shop to try 1 out and i thought it sounded quite lifeless and frankly dull, and i know it wasn't the amp because i got some great sounds out of it using other basses. anyway that's my view on them, not that any of u will care
Are the OLP Stingrays any good? I've never had the chance to play one, and I've only heard of them a couple of times.
Yah, it sucks. But I make my own moeny.. not much - 15 bucks a week. I don't care how long it takes. I WANT A STING RAY!!!
Yeah, they are. I have one, and I love the sound/feel/look of it. These are well-built instruments and they play really well. The pickup they use is great. The tone is nearly identical to the true StingRay, with a little more required of your amp. But I don't have to use the graphic EQ on my SVT3 like I did with my P-Bass. I'm thinking upgrading the electronics if it's cost effective. Does anyone know how much it will cost to: Add a BassLines pickup, 3-band EQ, install an output jack on the underside of the body, and rout it for all this? I'm wondering if it will be worth it to do this now, or just wait till I get the real thing...
15 bucks a week????? where do u work???? im gonna work at acme, makin $6.15 an hour, i dun kno if its like that at all the acmes, but i kno the one near me is
I've heard a lot about these new OLP basses...and I'm just wondering one thing. Are the electronics active or passive? I'm guessing passive for the price, but you never know. Jared
i prefer the sterling ...... but the sting rays are indeed awesome basses. well worth the money the cost, IMO. that sucks that your parents dont let you but it is understandible. my parents have never really put a "limit" on my spending/buying . i also make my own money, mowing lawns is my main thing. easy money.
I owned an older Sting Ray not to long ago...it was my first bass and I recently sold it and I must say I like my Rick better then the Sting. Of course the Sting is better then any Fender I have touched, but really its not that great. It plays fast, maybe it was just me, but I didn't like it's tone. It was nice and bassy, but didn't have that feel, that vibe to it. Can't explain, but it was like instrument was dead and literally old, like it was energyless. Oh well, it was a great first bass...much better then what most people start out with....

Hey man, most stingrays have a 3 band eq on 'em, so you musn't have had it set right or something, cuz if you fool around with the eq's on that thing, you'll get the sound that you want....I promise...And what the hell do you know anyway!?...no, im jk...keep rockin out guyz....
The OLP Stingrays have passive electronics. Bassically, after playing and buying the real MM Stingray, I don't think I will ever get one of the cheaper ones, but if it plays well and sounds and feels good, go for it! jtbp
Thanks Jim! I had been having a really hard time finding that info on the net. I'm mainly just looking for a 2nd bass. I have a Dean currently and I really like it. I would love to get a real MM, but money is somewhat lacking at the moment You don't happen to know if OLP has a homepage do you? I checked at Ernie Ball's site...but they make no mention of it. Jared
You might want to try to search this forum for any other things, but as far as I know they don't have a hompage. The only place I have seen any specs on these basses is on www.musiciansfriend.com . Other than that there really isnt much out there. jtbp
