I run a pair of 4 ohm cabinets in series for an 8 ohm load. I bought a funky T shaped speaker cable. My main rig is a tube head, so I'm not really loosing output with it this way... for my backup, by going from 4 ohms to 8 I'm going from 1100 watts to 900 watts... still MORE then enough.
Any two channel power amp with separate preamp will do. Example: I run two 4 ohm 4x10 cabs, each one on a different channel of my QSC PLX3002 power amp.
My cabs are all 4 ohms. When I need more than one cab, I just use an additional amp (Thunderfunks). Having said that, I'm going to be giving one of those Speakermate things a whirl soon. Just waiting for it to get here....
check this link one other tb member made a great list of heads that woudl power 2 ohms and i cant find the thread click here
the cable he's using hooks the cabinets up in series rather than parallel. 4 ohm and 4 ohms in series is 8 ohms .
I am really interested in this. I want to make sure I understand. James is coming out of the power amp, into one 4 ohm cab, out of that into another 4 ohm cab-right?
Ampeg SVT 4pro Ampeg B4r Hartke 7000 Carvin R1000/600 all have stereo power amps that will run one 4 ohm cab per side.
no that's a parallel conection special cables are required when using the parallel outs on cabinets and amps to make a series connection
I got a cable from http://www.procablesnsound.com/ it's a big "T" made from 12 gauge wire with 3x 3 foot legs. 1/4" connector for my Peavey tube head (and a 1/4" to speakon for my bridged Crown), then a speakon for each Schroeder cost me $50 with the adapter and shipping I caught the link to procablesnsound from Henry (fellow TBer and Benavente and Schroeder player like myself )
so here is my question if i have a gk 1001 rb that powers 1 4ohm or two 8 ohm . i am using 1 big 4 ohm now but would like to add 1 210 for some more punch highs etc. so i can get a cable from them that would connect the two cabs from 1/4 to 1/4 connector jacks to my head and it will work becuas eits in series and becomes an 8 ohm load?
I only got the speakon because my cabs have that option. having all 3 connectors 1/4" would make it a little cheaper I think. What does your head put out @ 8ohms? Some heads will loose to much, I was lucky that my poweramp is still 900watts at 8ohm bridged... and the tube head is the same at either 4 or 8 ohms
Hey James, I just tried out a 1/4 version of the cable you suggested (TFB-420 into two 4 ohm WBS 2X12 cabs). A local shop here made one up for me, and it only took about 15 minutes!. It actually works great! So if my amp is now "seeing" 8 ohms, I should be able to run a 3rd 4 ohm cabinet in parallel to make the amp operate at 4 ohms again, right? Boooohhaahahhahahaha!!!
