Listen, im having a problem.. i need a new bass.. i have about 500 bucks and i play serious metal/death metal/grindcore. but i actually play the bass as oppose to bangin the top string.. i need a 4 sting bass that can handle my style of playing. i play in drop c and i was looking at either the schecter c-4 or the ibanez sr500.. i know nothing about basses, all i know is that i want emgs.. but i dont know how these other pick ups Bartolini MK1 Pickups, on the ibanez hold up.. which is the better buy. and if not one of these, what can i get for my price.. thank you

For starters, you posted in the amps and pickups thread and you question is about basses. Second, you posted in Double Bass section (those are the big wooden ones that you saw when you were were a kid on field trip to see the Nutcraker) and you play bass guitar. Metal on a double bass......I guess anything is possible.

So, back out, re-orient and go into the bass guitar section. I'm sure a moderator will come along and move your post eventually anyway.

Finally, search the archives. Click on search, advanced search, bass guitars and start doing your research. Talkbass is a great source and you'll find what you're looking for.

    ROCK ON!!!!

Get a used Mexican P-bass it works for all styles of music. I bought one for $100 years back and it's all I used until I bought this big German fiddle that I have now. You can pick one up for between 100 and 300. Use the rest of the $ to put toward an amp.

If you get a Testore or Panormo, you should probably stick with Bartolino pups. You know, since they're all Italian names.

    Ebay for an Ibanez SRX-405
I got a 5 string version of that for $220 shipped. Great for a pick or metal players. My five strings is ADGCF.

To drop C try getting a bass that has a 35" neck. The longer the neck, the more tension it will have. If not, no worries, get thicker strings to fix that tension issue and maybe raise the action a bit.

I second the SRX comment. An SRX 500 or SRX 300 is probably what you are looking for.

I play an SRX model (as if you couldn't tell) and they are really set up tone wise for what you plan on doing with it. They don't use EMG's though, and they have skinny necks which some people don't like.

I don't use it much anymore because it's tone really doesn't fit what I'm doing these days but I keep it as a back up because I really like the way it plays.

    Go try one out.

Does Hawkes make an SRX copy? cause I thought I saw one of those on EBay.

Oh also, if I play gut strings can I still install a Bigsby vibrato?

I want to play grindcore on a DB. I think it would sound badass.

  14. Well, it would sound bad. And I guess people from this part of the world would say that "it sounds like ass." So you're right, again.

People used to say the electric bass was a toy once upon a time. Some still do. Fortunately, they're all old and bitter and aren't important to the scene anymore. There will always be a place for both kinds of basses.

BTW, you are wrong. Listen to Nekromantix and tell me grindcore wouldn't sound awesome on an upright.

  16. I was joking. And obviously I'd be wrong if I was contradicting you.

I play upright, but I feel that there's a place for it, and a place for electric. The again, what the hell would I know? (rehtorical question) (just incase you didn't get it) (by "you" I don't mean Jimmy, because he gets everything)
