EXB504 full by skot71 posted Jan 3, 2015 at 10:26 PM EXB504 body by skot71 posted Jan 3, 2015 at 10:26 PM EXB504 headstock by skot71 posted Jan 3, 2015 at 10:26 PM Picked up an Ibanez EXB504 at a pawn shop for 50 bucks. From what I've gathered, it's a 1991. Serial number is 900xxxx. It's in really nice shape, only a couple small dents on the body, and one on the headstock. I have a couple questions for you all. What are your suggestions on fixing the headstock chip? I have some black stick on pickguard material that I may cut. The black finish is pretty thick, so this pickguard material wouldn't be quite thick enough, but may work fine. The other problem is the pots. The volume, or one closest to the pickup (I assume it's volume) would not turn. I got it to turn, but it turns hard. Does not change anything. Second one was scratchy, but it's better now. Both of those are marked B500K. I haven't looked for pots yet, but would any pot work as long as it's marked B500K, or do I have to get one made for a bass or guitar? Thanks in advance for any help!!
I had a 505, great sounding on the EADG strings but the B was just horrible. The EX series is a passive bass, so any 500k pots you buy will be able to replace the ones in there, just make sure they are the same post (the thing the knob attaches to, some are split, some are slotted, others are splined) and with enough clearance to get through the top wood of the bass. Best bet is take one of the existing ones out and make sure the one you buy looks like it. The headstock chip, I can't really help with that. Replacing pots isn't really as simple as dropping new ones in, you'll need to wire them the same way, and make sure you don't break the leads on the capacitor for the tone knob (or you'll have to buy a new one, not TOO hard but it can be confusing). Take a few pictures of the control cavity before you disconnect the old pots and wire the new ones in the exact same way. You could also get some contact cleaner and spray it into the pots, it might free them up and save you from having to replace them.
Thanks for the advice! I cut a piece of pickguard for the headstock, and you can't tell it's there from a few feet away. On the wiring, i'll try the contact cleaner. And definitely take pics of everything before I remove anything. The first pot, which I assume is volume, doesn't do anything. That's the one that didn't turn at first. I'm guessing it's shot, but will try the cleaner before I do anything.
@skot71 did you ever get this set up the way you like it? Also, how do you like it? I'm looking at a similar model myself and like Ibanez. Is it a narrow neck? Also is it passive? Thanks! BTW Good catch!
I did. I screwed up though. I was drilling a hole to replace the barrel jack with a electro-jack, I think it's called. Snapped part of the body off. Much gluing, sanding, and bondo later, it is now pearl metallic white. I don't play a whole lot, but it plays fine to me. My son plays more, and likes how it plays. The neck on this is narrow. I have pretty small hands, and the neck on this fits them well. It is passive. Good luck on getting yours. What model is it?
Hey @skot71 ! Thanks for the answers. I found one that's probably pretty rare. It's a lefty purple EX. I think it's from 1990's. I'm nearly ready to pull the trigger on this guy: It looks more purple in other pictures:
Thanks. Ibanez lefty's are like Ford Model T's. You can get them in any color as long as it's black! Ha ha ha! So I'm thinking hard on this one just because it's so hard to get a decent lefty in another color. At least for Ibanez.
I think from the research on mine, yours is a couple years newer than the one I have. I think mine is a '91. That looks like it is in good shape. The purple looks darker, but could be the lighting. I have seen pics of some purple Ibanez basses that look more towards blue. Mine was very purple!
Yep. Yours is the perfect definition of purple! I should have posted the second or third pic, it's very purple in other pics.
I've enhanced the picture -- lightened it and boosted the saturation and I think this depicts more of the true color of the bass. Some people just don't care enough to take good pics, but this one looks like it's in pretty good shape, and it's listed as "great condition."
Sooo... great condition? Only 2-3 major flaws the seller didn’t mention? Am I being eBay cynical again? Sorry. I’m sure the seller is honest.
Very cool! My first bass purchase was an EXB-404. I had the stock pickups replaced with EMGs and added black knobs. It sounded and played great, but I'm a Fender Jazz guy at heart, so I sold it.
Hi Matt. Thank goodness it's not Matt. And I've been doing eBay since 2000. I don't buy from anyone under 100% positive feedback. I always ask for pictures, also of the neck views. This is a reputable vendor, but point taken.
I was mostly joking. I've had pretty good luck with Ebay to. I really hope the bass is everything you want.
Thanks my friend. I don't understand what I was typing???? I don't know what It's Not Matt means???? LOL I think I need a NAP!!!! Peace, brother. Thank you for the kind words.
