Hey guys, I'm having a problem here and I'm hoping someone can set me straight since I'm not very knowledgeable about basses. I need a new bass and I'm aimming for a sounds that is like The Summer Set/Blink 182/The All-American Rejects but I want something that is reliable and will last since all three of my other electrics are screwed up in one way or another. I've been thinking about getting a Dean Edge '10 with Active Pickups or a cheaper Ibanez model since I have limited funds. Any ideas?
The edge isn't bad at all. I liked the 6er I played. I think you will get the same quality over time with either one though. You can find an older sr400 for about 300. I'd pick ibanez because I've had so many and I've never had a problem
That's what I was thinking when I said Ibanez. Right now I'm using an Ibanez 10EAB for fun acoustic shows and school and it's been great. What has me weary about the Dean Edge is that I had a Dean Edge 09 for my first electric, but the nut busted on both sides and one of the tuning pegs fell off with in a year and I couldn't find the parts to fix it.
I'm pretty sure all those bands you named either use Gibson or Fenders with passive pickups. Is there a reason you're not going in that direction?
+1.. If you want cheap and reliable buy a mexican fender. You can find them for around 300 on the classifieds and for the price they are great. (I'm selling a mim p if you are interested)
I'd even recommend something from the Squire Vintage Modified line. I tried the VM jazz bass and was pretty impressed at the quality for the price (and in my opinion I liked the feel of it better than MIM Fenders)
I'd go with an Ibanez between the two but I'd have to agree with a MIM Fender as others have suggested.
The problem I have with that is that most of the parts I need to fix my basses aren't sold at my local guitar shops. The only bass I can salvage my is Squire Affinity by buying a new neck (which I might do). My Edge is missing too many parts, and the Principle P bass I have is a cheapo practice bass that isn't worth doing all the upgrades to make it sound decent..and also the parts I need would exceed my budget. I do not have a specify reason other than I am familiar with Dean and Ibanez since they are what I've been playing for the last 2-3 years. I suppose price would be the best reason I have since I know Gibsons and Fenders are outside my spendable budget.
Hmm, well I think if you're trying to sound like guys who use Fenders the first step would be to try that. And the basses Squire Vintage Modified line I referred to in my last post are all around $300 or lower. Don't get distracted by Fender's highest end. Its not always necessary to spend that much if you're looking for a classic passive/bolt-on sound.
True. I saw a Squire Vintage Model Jaguar on Guitar Center's website for $200. I'm hoping to make a trip up there over the week and check it out and maybe place an order for it if I like the feel.
Id browse CL, Ebay and of course TB Classifieds for parts to frankenstein them back together. Or, sell and part that stuff out if you cant get some type of replacement parts. You would have more to put towards a newer bass. pick ups and cheapie tuners can be had for next to nothing on this site some times. Im just trying to help a fellow Bassist maximize his options http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f129/new-parts-bridges-tuners-p-pups-872914/ This is someone elses add that has usable parts for less than a pack of strings would cost
I prefer Ibanez over Dean. I have a few Ibanez Soundgear basses and for the money they are good basses. With Dean basses and guitars, I am yet to play one that I have liked. They are probably actually in my top 5 of least favorite basses. Like others have recommended a Fender cheap bass, even they would be better than a Dean.
