  1. Geez, I knew Panga Panga was soft, but I didn’t think it was that soft.

Do you still have the stock Chromes on it, or did you change the strings?

Yeah stock flatwounds, I'll try and get a picture in a few hours when I get home.

On a positive note I managed to fix my electronics myself, so everything is working now.

  3. Great! Was it just a bad solder joint or something like that?

20181011_163606. Here is a picture of the wear on the fingerboard.

I wouldn't be bothered with such string marks. It's still very far from what could even be called worn. It's not like the fingerboard are chewed so the surface is unleveled. Just play your Portamento.

  7. I’ve got an early (2014) SRF705. The rosewood fingerboard marked up like that quite early on, but doesn’t seem to have gone any worse - it’s much darker than the panga panga so perhaps not so obvious. As far as I can tell it’s not affecting the playability. Maybe try moving to nylon tapes?

Sad, not sure why they decided to put panga panga fretboards on there. So many woods available that have much harder janka scores. Mystifying to me. Even run of the mill bamboo is harder than Panga Panga.

Indian Ebony is 2430 and still readily available. Snakewood looks like it would be an amazing fretboard.

It only has about 30 minutes of play time on it though, that is not what I would expect from the limited amount of use it has.

Still, even if such marks occurred out of hours of play time, I would't start worrying until the fingerboard are unleveled.

  11. Yep. Mine has a rosewood board and also looks like that from using flatwounds.

@illbegotten: weird, yes. and maybe even weirder than weird, because the tag is factory's fresh, not shop's. as the box was factory fresh, as the shrinkwrap around it was, too. and the bass was just... pristine, untouched, not a string mark, and an idea of setting that was maybe proper before it crossed the seas in a boiling cauldron for a couple of
months, but this is just curiosity, i can't complain at all, heck, i'm grateful to them, and (whether by blind luck, or by competent design, can't honestly say) i've blessed by having received one that's so more resonant, although a tad livelier and brighter, than the one before, which also had probably seen 18 months of sweaty, greasy, stinky hands from hoardes of shop visitors!

Aren't flatwounds supposed to be less damaging than rounds?

  14. Yes, but if you put any metal string on wood and press down on it, it will mark up the wood.

It’s really not a problem until you can feel a groove in the wood with your fingers.

Right, but not in the little amount of time that this has. Like I said before I have another fretless that is 20 years old that has always had rounds and it isn't marked up at all.

  16. I have never seen a fretless with roundwound strings and no marks on the fingerboard wood unless it was heavily shellaced.

Yeah, I just pulled out the fretless I was talking about and it does have some marks. Not bad though, especially considering it is 20 years old. I must have just stopped paying attention to the marks since the bass is older. I have another one that is about 13 years old I have to pull out and give a good look at to see if that one is marked up too. That one is an acoustic bass that has always had rounds on it too.
