    Hi guys!

    Quick question!

I'm in the market for a good 6 string for under 1 large and have picked the Ibanez SR506. It's a great bass and with my experience with defretting and epoxying fingerboards I can get one growling just the way I like it and not have to drop $1500! My question is, does anybody who has this bass know what the radius is of the fingerboard. I ask because I was thinking of crazy gluing some white plastic bindings in the fret slots and I need to sand them down to the arc of fingerboard. I know I can do this without a radius block but they make the surface so nice and uniform!

    Your thoughts?

After I get this figured out I need to find a good clean used Ibanez SR506!

    Thanks!

Ibanez uses metric measurements, so their fretboard radius is 400mm. And I would not advise re-radiusing without a block or jig - whoever told you you can do it without a block was a bit misguided in my view...

    Cool!

I don't want to do it without a block, so, what is the English equivalent to a 400mm radius? I only really need the radius block to sand down the plastic strips. I know I can do that without the block, but the block makes everything so much easier!

Is that a 15 or 16 radius block?

16" for that model of Ibanez works great. Even if the fingerboard is 15.75 inches, going a little bit big is better than going small, as you can rock it back and forth on the fretboad while sanding to get things flush.

I prefer the longer 12" blocks.

So when you say rock it back and forth you mean back and forth along the length of the fingerboard from nut to heel right?

Right, so you get an even sanding on the whole fingerboard.
When you find a good bass and get it underway, post your pics. :)

    Ok!

I was looking into a Conklin 7 string groove tools as well! I see that the radius is 16 as well. Would I be able to use a normal radius block with a neck that wide when sanding down the plastic strips. I think I would really like to go this route but I want to make sure I can make the neck crown like it needs to be! Has anybody used these instruments in a fretless role before? I need more strings!

A fretless 7 string would be a dream come true!

My other question is can I find a set of nylon wrapped bass strings for a 7 stringer. Labella deep talking is my string of choice but I know they don't make anything higher than a 6. Anybody?

I agree with beej Don't do it without block. Maybe check string gauges and then you may have a better idea what strings you can use.
