I'm revising the sophomore barrier exam for the U, and would like skew the material away from the same bebop heads that the horn players have to do and make it a bit more bass centric and include practical stuff that bass players should know out on a gig in the real world. Help brainstorming would be much appreciated. So far, I've got the lines from: So What All Blues Footprints Bolivia Killer Joe Maiden Voyage Cantaloupe Island Black Narcissus Mercy Mercy Mercy And the "Bird of Paradise" intro from "ATTYA" Need to revise by end of next week. Let the brainstorming begin!
Intro to RECORDAME, hell ALL the intros to the Bird heads. Intro to JOY SPRING if you want some fun throw SHADE OF JADE in there. You gonna do tags too?
Parts: Caravan Equinox Giant Steps Played Twice Recorda-me Stolen Moments Take Five Melodies: Goodbye Porkpie Hat A Remark You Made Spain Speaking practically I'd also be looking at various dance grooves -- mambo, foxtrot, straight waltz vs jazz waltz, chacha, samba, and blues, blues, blues.
I wasn't going to mention Autumn Leaves, except there is a Ray Brown version that it killer. I'll have to find it again.
Oh...Rikki, Josie, Aja, Rose, Katy, Janie, Abbie, Pixeleen, Gina. If you've met one Steely Dan muse, you've met them all!
Exactly, and i'd add especially Star Eyes. As far as others, Giant Steps was mentioned, i always make sure students play that whole step line that PC plays (and that Steve Davis plays more expansively on But Not For Me, Satellite and 26-2, among others). Another big one in this neck of the woods is KD's Short Story and the intro figure that Richard Davis plays, as well as the coda, which is really it's own (amazing) tune in and of itself
OK - I confess - I don't have this one in my quiver: Thanks for draining another few inches out of my pool of self-esteem, Michael!
Blue Bossa - original version (Butch Warren on bass). Blue Bossa: What You Don't Know About The Standard Blue Bossa Bass Tabs - Joe Henderson @ BigBassTabs.com
Here's an accurate transcription of Butch Warren's bass line. The high G and D in the second bar are played as harmonics. - Steve
