I have this jazz right now:

(the top is not nearly as quilt as it looks...)

Nino's Valenti red Geddy inspired jazz gave me ideas.

How would that body look with black hardware and pickguard (similar to Nino's)? I would like the maple/black block inlay neck, but that would definately have to wait. I'm in no hurry to buy a new bass, but thought this might be a decent looking mod.

  2. It would definitely look good, no doubt, but do you really want to spend ~$100 to beautify an instrument that didn't cost much more than that? To me that's like spending $400 to paint an '87 Ford Escort station wagon.
  3. I kinda agree on this. Honestly if you were to change something on it, I'd go recommend the pickups.

nope, don't want to change the pickups. They are better sounding than most other jazz pickups I have heard.
  5. In that hardware wouldn't make it as "bling bling", but would make it more dark and evil looking, resulting in a cooler look....IMO.
  6. This month's issue of Bass Guitar magazine has an article about Geddy and it shows him posing with a Jazz Bass with a wine red body, no pickguard and and a maple/black block inlay neck...very interesting.

For a cool, inexpensive mod, go to and check out the overlays. I have a set of 1/4" dots coming for my P-clone.

I used the abalone dot inlays on my Alvarez bass I sold. Looked great

Really? Looks like Geddy's famous black jazz to me, not wine red . . .
  9. I don't have the magazine here at work but, as I recall, that photo is inside with the article. Of course, it is possible that I've completely lost my mind and am having hallucinations. People have been accusing me of that for years...and they may be right. I hate those straightjackets, they always tie them so tightly.

I think the SX pickguard is sightly different from a fenders. Since the site doesn't show that they're selling anything I'd try and contact Kurt and see if he has any that he hasn't posted up on the site.
  11. It is. Back when I had my 4 string SX Jazz I got a Fender pickguard and it wasn't a perfect fit. Needs to be filed down in some places, and not all the holes line up either, but, I did get it on there and it was killer, so yes, it is possible to throw a fender one on there, but requires a little work.

This sounds like a fun project. I say go for it. Be sure to post pics when you are done.
