What makes a Rumble 500 combo amp a "V3"? How can you tell?

Very easily! The Rumble 500 didn't exist until the third generation of Fender Rumbles. The V3 Rumbles were first introduced at Winter NAMM 2014.

A number of things if you're talking cosmetics. The V3 is styled in the classic Fender look; the panel is top-loaded instead of the V2's front face; cream-colored knobs; model numbers reflect wattage and they're also different from V2; 1/8" aux jack instead of RCA inputs, but the most obvious distinction is after you hoist one up and realize it weighs nothing.
