If I say punchy low mids yet capable of soft but defined highs what bass comes to mind?

This is the sound in my head but my GAS is playing tricks on me and keeps telling me I need a different bass to get it.

Choose my next bass for me and the next episode might just be helping my choose a bass to rid myself of.

That might mean something to you, but I bet it means something different to everyone else.
    For me, Steinberger XL2.

Thanks for your reply. That’s actually my point. I’m stuck on a few GAS items but I feel that I am going on preconceived ideas so I am looking to broaden my thinking.

    I’ll look up the steinberger.

Lol, that’s the first time I’ve been called young in a few years, thanks. :)

But yeah, when I was growing up the 80’s was not looked upon with admiration. I almost bought one of the newer Epiphone reissue steinbergers a year or so ago but i prefer the feel of of a standard body.

  10. Im my curious quests, a hubucker (particularly Seymour Duncan Smb-4a) and fender original split P combo is just that.
Similar combos are starting to come out on the name brand markets.
I recently put together a 4a sandwiched between Wilkinson jazz pickups. That combo is sounding really good too.

Endorsements: your name could be here, Mr. Sadowsky!
Lots of folks like a G&L L2000 or L2500 for these characteristics.

I think I can relate to what you're chasing, and a G&L L-2000/L-2500 can do it in passive mode. Watch out for the active/active with treble boost, it can get harsh fast, esp. w/ stainless rounds.

    Is there a prize?

(I'd also consider anything Steinberger, as I believe you've described the bass tone in his head!)

My current Jazz bass. The Lakland I had. You're describing most 2 pickup basses.

Seems like a preamp with parametric mids and a presence knob could do the job with basically any bass that's well made.

Other than that, isn't punchy low mids, capable of soft highs the very definition of the P bass sound?

  20. My warwick corvette if I set the pickup pan part way towards neck pickup and turn down the treble control a fair bit, because warwicks cut through even with the treble turned down, but in a nice way (imho). But I think most good basses can do what you are describing... honestly.
