I read a while ago that Canada got rid of it's penny, and got to thinking. The penny is often thought of as a annoyance more than anything, and I know plenty of people who have buckets and jars full of them. The problem is a jar or bucket often only equals out to a couple of dollars, and usually isn't worth it to redeem at some coin sorter. So What do you think? Should the U.S. get rid of it's penny? If so, what would you do with those useless little copper circle?

Now we simply round up or down to the nearest nickel. Definitely a good idea! One of the few things done by our federal government that I fully support....

Canada was definitely not the first country to toss the penny. I am pretty sure New Zealand has rounded to the 5 cent mark since the 90s. I thought it was a genius idea when I first heard of it.

I don't see it catching on in America because some cheap skate nutbars are going to complain that retailers are price fixing so everything rounds up. ;)

Guys, stop it. You're derailing the thread. This is about currency. This **** is important.

You got me. People in my office are giving me weird looks. Maybe I'll throw some pennies at them.

Ceasar says thumbs down to the penny.
If they do away with them, I'm collecting a truck full and bringing them to the smelter for weight payment.
Hint: modern American pennies are not pure copper. Sometime over the last 30 years they changed the alloy.

Boy, don't I know it. Right now I'm sitting on a four-gallon Utz's pretzel jar that's maybe one-third full of pennies. If there was a coin sorting machine a block or two away from where I live, I'd redeem 'em and take my, what, $7.50 to buy a beer. Problem is, the nearest coin sorting machine is 9 miles away, which is a $2.50 subway ride...that's eating into my profits, man!

If I had a gun that shot pennies I'd be all set for the zombie apocalypse.

What can't eliminate the penny. What will happen to my grandsons' college fund?

Pennies remain legal currency. They are simply no longer minted and put into circulation.

It makes a lot of sense, in part because it costs much more than a penny to make a penny....

What will happen to the "leave a penny, take a penny" tray at 7-11?
