Not sure if I should post this question on the technique page or not.

I'm trying to learn I'm Broken by Pantera. it's pretty easy, accept that I am having trouble with the main riff.

Do you guys play the first riff with open strings or in the third position starting off with the hammer ons on the G string (the song is down tuned one step) at the 5 and 7th frets?

I find it really hard to get all the notes in (especially the 3rd fret D string) when I start of at the third position.

Hope this makes sense. Really hard to explain in words.

While I tend to prefer the tone of fretted notes to open ones, in this case, open notes are your friend.

I've always played it by picking the 5th fret on the G string and then hammering onto the 7th fret. Then I pick the 7th fret D string, pull off to the 5th fret and then pick the 3rd fret by sliding my index finger down. Then it's just picking the open D. I don't know if that's correct, but it always sounded right to me.
