Go and play one. What brand are you talking about? Fretted basses do not sound alike.

Never ask a question while on shrooms. One or two variables. Or is it seven or eight? Body wood, board wood, pickups, pickup configuration, preamp, strings, amp, your fingers, your ears.

  4. Keep in mind, it also depends on what strings you use. I have a fretless with a neck coated in polyurethane and use bright, nickle round strings. Safe to say that it sounds a lot different than other fretless set ups.

  7. My yamaha fretless actually has more output with its single passive P pup than my custom Jag with 2 EMG J's on 9v
