A little research into the archives goes allllloooooonnnnngggggg way. You'll find a wealth of advice for those wishing to step into the dark side.

First and foremost, GET A TEACHER. ONE WHO IS SCHOOLED IN PLAYING A STRINGED-INSTRUMENT. PREFERABLY SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN CLASSICALLY TRAINED.

Second, do not confuse playing a bass guitar with playing a bass. Although you may have some scale familiarity, the technique is very different. Quite frankly, proper technique is the key not only to advancement, but also to injury-free enjoyment.

Lastly, if you have not already done so, have your instrument properly set up by a bass luthier. I don't know where Clinton Township resides in the Great Lakes state, but I would highly recommend Steve Reilly at the Guarneri House in Grand Rapids.

    Good luck!
