I was at my local music shop, and I figured i would try out a few basses that tickled my fancy. Every time i go there and enter the bass room, i end up picking the Geddy Lee Jazz up. Of course, im a GINORMOUS rush fan, and i've been wanting one since they were $630, which was quite a few years ago. I played on Those new Marshall MB450H Head and the Marshall VBC810 Cab. the sound was of course, incredible. But then, i looked on the wall, and i decided to try out A Fender American P-bass deluxe. The one with the huge humbucker. Oh. My. God. It was also incredible. It has a great top end and crystal clear crunch to it, plus the bottom wasn't even close to a slouch. So, my pickle is, I dont know which one to grab.... I mean...i know the benefits of both, and i know the price differences, but i dont know... My 18th birthday is coming up a week from today, and i dont know if whether or not my dad will help out..i should ask.. Anyhow.... The P-bass deluxe is $1179 with a hardshell case, and the geddy is of course $799 with a deluxe gig bag. I really really really dig them both. Another thing to help my choice is that I already have a black bass... The geddy is black, but has an amazing neck. The PDeluxe has a maple neck with abalone dots, and is an amazing sunburst. I need help! help me out please!
Neither, I suggest the Fender Reggie Hamilton bass. Great guy and great bass. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Reggie-Hamilton-Jazz-Bass?sku=515039
Dont listen to Panda thats a terrible bass! GET THE AMERICAN DLX wait you know what? im going to buy it so HA!
I have a MIA P and just added a Geddy to the stable. I have to say that the impressed me most about the Geddy was the neck. Absolutely wonderful. I don't know what your sound needs will be long term, but the Geddy sure is fun to play. I'm putting flats on it tommorow, which will help give me the sound I need.
I voted the Geddy Lee Jazz Bass. But that would only be me personal, placing myself in your shoes. ... Let me explain. I myself am not a Geddy Lee fan (respect to him though), But since you are that's a plus. The signature bass of your hero. On the other hand you don't need that bass to still admire him. So think about that. And the American Deluxe, well that is me personal: i don't like that humbucker. (I'm a purist, in some ways ) So with the information given by you I would subjetively go for the Geddy. I hope you can make your choice. What felt and sounded the best to you?
I have owned both. The Geddy does have a great sound, and that uber thin neck, but the Am Dlx is a whole step up, quality-wise. I sold my Ged to a friend, but my Dlx P will stay with me forever, it's all around fantastic, and would also be worth more in re sale. That big fat Humbucker has a tone all it's own, and together with the split P, and the 18volt preamp, and 3 band eq, it's a smokin' hot bass.
Well, Im not thinking about the geddy just because hes my hero. That is a pretty good factor into it, but i also dig the bass and its quality and sound as well. Its damn fine looking too. As well as the DLX Pbass though.... Im usually not one to like the P bass, but damn this one is quite incredible..... I dont know.... i need someone to persuade me one way or the other.
The DLX P will do a whole lot more. As much love as the GL gets around here, I just don't think it can compete with a bass twice its price. Another thing to consider are the necks - people love those skinny little necks, but DAMN do they warp and twist. The DLX is graphite reinforced. No brainer there. So my feeling is this - if that P speaks to you, go for it. A bass that truly fits is priceless.
I can persuade you one way or the other... [Godfather mode ON] YOU CAN ACT LIKE A MAN!!! [Godfather mode OFF] Seriously, just buy a bass and be done with it and don't look back.
I don't know...Justin Meldal-Johnsen is using a Geddy with NIN and loves it. So I'd say it can compete quite well. As for the warping and twisting, the graphite is not only no guarantee that your neck won't warp and twist, but millions of basses with skinny necks have been made without graphite and they don't all warp or twist. Very few do, as a matter of fact.
JMJ is playing with NIN? As in Trent Reznor, Nine Inch Nails? If so, I might have to check out their tour dates.
I just took my Geddy out of the case for the first time in over a year, and I'm having a hard time putting it down. I have been playing a P bass because it was the sound the band needed / prefered. I forgot how much the Geddy snarled and growled. I do love the tone personally... but I've got one more thing you need to consider: That super thin neck feels "fast" and comfortable / easy to play for short jams. I did find that when I played it with a band for a long period of time, 2 or 3 hours into it I was getting a lot of cramping in my hand that I didn't get playing the same set(s) of tunes with a different bass. I'd say, if at all possible, play the Geddy for a long time nonstop to see if you are going to cramp up on that thin neck.
So my opinion wasn't of any use to you. If I wanted a Precision, I personally would go for the American Standard. You favor the DLX, you seem to find the sound awesome to your taste. If I wanted a Jazz I wouldn't go for the Geddy. I have a MIM fretless Jazz, but I could easily go for the Squier or the Fender Jaco... It's great that we have that much choices. But on the other hand it's kind of a pickle like you word it. It would be cool if you could afford them both. It will cost much, but consider them as the ultimate set of two basses. What do you need most? Are you in a band? What would be more suitable in your band then? Since it is the best P for you or either the best J for you. Precision or Jazz. Good luck with your choice. But: cliché cliché, no one can make that choice for you. Only give you feedback.
If you're thrilled with the neck on the GL why not try an american deluxe Jazz? I've heard very good things about the new 08's and it might be worth trying one out. Or you could get a used Rickenbacker for the old Geddy tone.
Yep, he joined about 3 weeks ago. I should say he's using his Geddy along with 7 other basses, and it's got DiMarzio J's on it, but it's still a Geddy.
