I'm looking for that Stingray sound...

  1. I was asking about a Stingray at a music shop where I live, and the salesman told me that as soon as he ordered Stingrays, they were usually snatched up pretty quickly, and used ones are hard to find. I don't feel like driving to Houston just to hear what one sounds like, so could someone name some songs where the sound is noticeable? Thanks.

    Hm, letssee.

Old Chili Peppers, e.g. Mother's Milk, not sure on the new stuff, but the sound is similar in any case.

Gary Grainger on John Scofield's Pick Hits Live - monster slap bass!

Tony Levin uses a MM, so you might hear one on Peter Gabriel's albums.

There's more, but I'm too tired to think of more examples right now - it's 2 AM over here.

Don't know if I agree that used Stingrays are hard to find. They are on ebay almost daily, and there are generally plenty on bassgear.com, basspalace.com, and harmonycentral.com. I believe there was a recent thread on who plays MM basses. I would think you could listen to their stuff and get an idea of the sound. :)
