IMO: Rick Ruben is not a good producer

He is, but he isn't. :eyebrow:

OK, his production style is very smooth and stylistic, he makes everything sound very clean...

    I don't like that.

Their have been so many bands that he took the edge completely out of their sound. Red Hot Chili Peppers, System of A Down (I still like their first album), Audioslave (Rage's tone was much better ala Evil Empire and s/t).

For non agressive bands, Ruben's style would be fantastic, everything sounds great. But it has no edge.

    Meh.

Slayer's South Of Heaven was THE heaviest **** back in the day...

On what other records do you base your O?

I honestly think Slayer's work with Rick Ruben sounds too polished. :meh:

Call me crazy, but I want my metal (especially) to be a little clunky. I mean, the music is definatly agressive, but it's like it's been wrapped in plastic to prevent the music from offending anyone.

What about Jay Z's new song, that sounds pretty aggresive for a rap song.

    Pretty much agree.

Career stiffed but signed to a contract???...........bring in Rubin. He'll make you sound like homogenized milk....."Oh. Beastie Boys are stiffing ??? Let's bring in Kerry King and morph them into Run DMC Jr!!!"

He's an integral part of what Pink Floyd was talking about in "Have a Cigar" and "Welcome to the Machine."

Can you imagine how emasculated Hendrix would have sounded if Rubin had his mitts on him ???

Ok, fair enough, but he's better than Bob Rock.

Add David Foster to the list.
Bands that once had an edge & later became 'homogenized' by Foster.

    Chicago
    Earth, Wind, & Fire
    Average White Band

That's like picking the lesser of two evils.

  9. *Try's to think of something bad to say about famous producer Mutt Lang...* Nothing, Back in Black was a great album.

True, but I think Bob "I can't rock to save my life" dulls the blade far more than Rubin ever could.

  11. I love Rick Rubin's work and disagree. If I had the cash and weight as a musician I'd hire him tomorrow. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Blood Sugar Sex Magic's engineering/production absolutely floors me to this day.

I've always liked Eddie Kramer's work too.

Don't get me wrong, his production is very... "Good"... but BSSM has 0 edge.

I think I understand what Matt is saying. I too have a love/hate relationship with Rick, mostly stemming from RHCP. Dig all the Slayer and System he did though. Why do ya gotta make me hate you?

THAT is what I call rock production.

Baofu, have you ever heard SOAD's first album? It sounds brilliant, crisp production that is at the same time heavy as hell... then Rick Ruben and SOAD took a collective dump and out came Toxicity.

  19. Wasn't "she" a character on Martin Lawrence's show?

  20. I don't know if i agree or disagree, but just for reference, what would you catagorize as edgy? give me a song for an example of a song that was produced with "edge"
