Just moved this past weekend - not a huge distance, just an hour from the old house, but oh man. Moving sucks. We overlapped the leases by two weeks so that we could shuttle a lot of boxes over gradually and paint some rooms, but still... On the final day, loaded a 24' truck to the gills and still had to go back for a second run. And then go back again to shovel out that last crud and clean the old place up (hate to leave any excuses for not getting the security deposit back...). Man, I'm tired.
I moved 20 minutes away and that was too much. I plan to die in this house or make enough money that all my crap can stay with it when I move, order all new, and have it delivered.
Oh, I hear you. You think you're done, but no, there's the hall closet. And the stuff under the bathroom sink. And the vacuum cleaner, brooms and mops. And that stuff that you were going to give to Goodwill, but it's too late to sort it out now, so you might as well just take it with you. Then when you finally get everything to your new place, you have to decide where to put everything. The rug doesn't fit where you thought it would. You can't find the power cord for your stereo. The TV should go over there, but the cable outlet is way over there. It's got to be one of my least favorite experiences. Total physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion.
Cry me a river buddy. I moved 3,400 miles 20 months ago, and we're fixing to move back in a few months. -Mike
I feel you, dude. We moved a couple of weeks ago, and after moving stuff for over 12 hours, we STILL weren't finished. I looked at my wife and said "I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I HATE MOVING. Let's not do this ever again." And it was less than a mile and a half from the old house. Ugh.
Too much stuff maybe? It took years but I eventually whittled my stuff to one car load. Then I got married so now I'm working on getting her to cut down and simplify http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1812048,00.html
That is the good thing about moving, ridding yourself of items you don't want to move. The move from WA to NH helped us clear a bunch of stuff, but we have accumulated more since we arrived in NH. The next move will hopefully allow us to free ourselves a little more from our possessions. -Mike
Moving tomorrow. I am a big proponent of getting rid of crap. Leading up to tomorrow, I have taken 18 garbage bags full of stuff to Goodwill. We have effectively halved all of our possessions. The apartment we are in now is furnished, so no furniture to move! Also that means taking a pretty big hit on buying furniture for the new place. But it will be nice to have furniture that we actually picked out and like. The move should be pretty easy, I boxed everything up in brand new small/medium Uhaul boxes, nice and neat and organized. Got a dolly and a small truck ready to go. Old and new place are both on the first floor. One thing that I do know is if I have to move again and I have a lot of furniture, I will hire movers. In town it's the best $200-300 you can spend. Think of what back surgery costs... $300 is nothing! It's just not worth it to wreck yourself/turn friends into enemies over schlepping some furniture.
My rule is if I buy something when I bring it home an greater volume of stuff has to go. Takes some discipline but it works It finally struck me as a little crazy that a couple would have to rent a storage unit because all their stuff wouldn't fit into a 2000 sq ft house and you couldn't park the car in the garage Stuff is evil
We just got through doing this. Very satisfying. Picking up every item in the house, saying "do I need this/ do I use this/will I ever use it again?" and then getting rid of it. I still need to go through the kitchen one more time and get rid of some more utensils and glasses.
My in-laws have a 3500ish sq ft house(mansion to me) and still have a storage unit packed to the gills. I don't know how this happens but I know I will not let it happen to me! "The things you own end up owning you."
I know how you feel dude. My dad is in the military so we had to move constantly when i was younger. We moved from NY to Ca to Ga. Unfortunately i won't be able to finish high school in Ga because we're moving to Arizona in a couple months. So you're not alone in hating moving. it's such a drag haha
I moved a few months ago. Sucked. Took the biggest UHaul they had and about a dozen more car loads to get my stuff out of the old place. Then I had 6 weeks until we settled on the new house so everything went to storage. Moving from storage to the new place wasn't nearly as bad b/c everything was already packed.
As a kid, I went to 13 differant schools due to moving so much. Felt like I never had any roots. Since moving from home many years ago I've lived at 5 differant locations which included where I am now. Been there since July, 1991. I keep saying "the good Lord willing, the day I leave my house for good is the day they carry me out....feet first!"
Of course, a guy got shot last night at the liquor store down the street while I was inside buying beer.
