I can not answer all that responded to my question on being a Virtuoso. I am great full of what was written and the new to me bass players I have now been made aware of.

The biggest thing that was shown by your responses is, the level of the players musicality is more important or just as important.
So what players are an example of musicality and inspired you ?

Musicality is great, but to me there's got to be something more. I don't like to watch movies with a lot of cleverly written lines and great cinematography but a thin plot, and I don't like music that doesn't communicate anything more than dazzling musical ability.

The question was about a "Virtouoso" person, not about what kind of movies you like. I dig that analogy but you totally missed the point Jimmy. Do I like the ET movie because of the ET creature alone? Well I would not agree with that.

But I think "musicality" here does *not* mean empty flash. Just the opposite.
Like Ringo, to use a drummer example.

The first bassist who comes to my mind is a double bassist: Charlie Haden.

yeah, we need some definitions: IME, saying someone is "musical" is paying a high compliment --- no matter their skills, great or small.

"Virtuoso" means pfft to me unless there's something behind it than mere chops. And ET was a great movie because of the plot, not just the ET character. OTOH, Star Wars sucked because the plot and acting sucked.

Peter MARK Egan. He's a session bassist who brings an a-game that's simply unbelievable

Christian McBride just crushes me. He's actually known as a upright Jazz guy, this is a rare moment on fretless electric

    Bass solo at 4:30

Juan Nelson (known for playing with Ben Harper) isn't as well known, but should make people reassess their practice routines

on the other end of the spectrum, you have a guy like Rex Brown of Pantera. Rarely out-front, but absolutely key to the musical vision

how much you wanna bet that's actually Lee Sklar on the album. It's fretless whatever it is, not the Musicman in the video, maybe upright.

The credits to the album Diamond Life only list Paul Denman on bass. Given that it was a new band recording in London they wouldn't have had the budget for Sklar, and if a session player had been brought in it would likely have been someone like Mo Foster or Pino Palladino.
