Indian/Middle Easter styles of music/fusion (Jonas Hellborg) how to?

Discussion in 'General Instruction [BG]' started by The_Ryst, Jul 30, 2005.

  1. How can I begin to learn these things? I"ve heard some clips from Jonas Hellborg/Shawn Lanes "Icon" and that's ILL! I want to learn how to play like that!

I'm sure a lot of it is exocit scales and the use of a fretless.

  3. Ah. any in specific? I mean, the eastern style of music is a whole different monster supposedly all western rules go out the window just about.

Get Yusef Lateef's "Compendium of Scales and Melodic Patterns". There are tons of eastern scales in there. Be aware that many of them use microtones so you'll need a fretless.

That will allow you to make a superficial impression that you are playing eastern inspired music. To actually play eastern music you have to study with a master.

  5. Hmm...any idea where I could meet one of those? lol

    Depends on where you live.
