Indonesia earthquake

Discussion in 'Off Topic [BG]' started by champbassist, Apr 11, 2012.

  1. Just felt it here as well. Was strong enough to nearly bring books down from my bookshelf and cause people to rush out of their homes.

As soon as I got back in, switched on the news. Epicenter near Aceh in Indonesia, 8.9 is the rating on the 'Richter scale' as of now (the estimate might be revised later). The 2k4 tsunami was around 9.1-9.3 on the Moment Magnitude scale.

This could be terrible. Hoping there's no tsunami :(

    Damn, could be big.

Let's hope this isn't a repeat of the 2004 disaster.

  4. According to reports, the National Disaster Management Authority here has ruled out the possibility of a tsunami.

Even so, this is the strongest earthquake since last year's Japan quake. There are no reports from Indonesia yet, but this can't be good :(

It's good to know there won't be a tsunami. I'll say a prayer for those in the affected areas... :(

  6. Massive 8.2 aftershock as well. It's pretty rare to have an aftershock of this magnitude, I believe.

Oh man, I really really hope that this one turns out to be not so bad...

  8. People gather at Chennai's Marina to watch 'tsunami' - Rediff.com India News

I'm flummoxed. How could people be so utterly stupid? Again, I know that there are many who are uneducated and unaware of how serious a tsunami could be and regard it as some sort of magical or mythical occurrence, especially after the events of December 2004.

  9. I'm a chicken man when it comes to those types of things, might watch but only from a safe distance.

I hate earthquakes, I was in Mexico City for a big one.

I think the wave was about a meter high. That's enough to cause damage in a marina.

It might be a disaster, but it's also a wonder of nature. I'd watch.. probably from a safe distance though :D
