I just ordered a fretless SX jazz bass, and when it comes i plan on replacing the neck pickup with a humbucker off of a early seventies kay bass. the humbucker is from the neck position of the kay bass if that makes a difference. but anyway:

assuming that these pickups have different out put, how do i calculate the difference and how do i compensate for it?

  2. Estimate the difference by ear and compensate it by adjusting pickup heights. If the humbucker is splitttable you can cut it's output (and add some clarity) by connecting it's coils in parallel.
