Pretty self explanatory, where do all us Massh$les get our lumber from? Nothing crazy exotic, I know I'm not finding cocobolo drop-tops locally, but how about some good old flame maple neck blanks or mahogany? I had a great local supplier called the Woodsmith in Falmouth, but unbeknownst, he retired and left me sourceless, other than the dreaded Mail Order. I've had my share of disappointment relying on generic wood photos online, and the shipping will eat you alive. I got a few nice pieces at Downes & Reader in Stoughton a while back, but they no longer sell retail. There are a few local lumberyards on the Cape that have decent wood randomly, but it's all stored outside in unheated warehouse conditions, so it's usually too wet to use right right away, or they only sell huge board lengths, all or nothing. I don't mind driving a while if a place has a good selection of wood types and sizes, but the closest I'm seeing that I can find out anything about is in New Hampshire.
There's gotta be a million and a half boat builders and hardwood/millwork suppliers for fancy boat building between the cape, Boston, RI, etc. No? Would those places have stuff or be able to get stuff (besides teak)?
None of them sell lumber retail though, and boatbuilding is pretty limited to teak and mahogany, maybe some oak or cypress. I'm sure im overlooking somebody. My former source Woodsmith was primarily a millwork and custom cabinetry shop, i had no idea he sold lumber retail until a builder mentioned it, he didnt advertise lumber sales, it was purely word of mouth. Id rather buy locally, I like to see the wood in person, and I.dont mind buying it rough. Somewhere out there is another Woodsmith.....but where?
There's one in Greenfield, but that's under "if you don't mind driving *quite* a ways" and there must be some closer - certainly many in other states (NH, ME, RI, CT) might be closer at that point. Don't know how they are on small bits, actually, but the web site looks positive.
The guys are in Taunton, seem to have good stock and have good reviews according to "teh google": Reader's Hardwood Supply Does look a mite far away from the cape? Man, I'd love to hear you guys pronounce "Taunton". I'm dying with laughter just thinking aboot it, eh?
And these guys are in East Bridgewater: SunnyLine7 They sure sound like they have a lot of selection.
Give Kimball Hardwoods a try... 83 King Street Johnston, RI 02919 I found him on Instagram and purchased a couple of beautiful tops from him (@kimballhardwoods) While it is in Oregon, I've also had very good luck with.. Guitar Wood Experts I have a "local" place but they are only open during work hours Monday through Friday, which makes it super tough to get there... which is probably a very good thing!
Thanks for.suggestions All, the one in Taunton would be about 1 hour + drive, the one in Greenfield more like 3+ hours. Think Ill call both and see what they have. I was born on Cape Cod, but lived most of my childhood, except summers on the Cape, just outside Philly, which has its own atrocious accent, which sort of neutralized any accent I might have picked up. The accent most people associate with Massachusetts is thickest in the Boston area, and a source of great amusement and pride to locals, like the Brooklyn accent is in New York. Anyway, my best phonetic attempt at "Taunton" in local patois: "Two- awnt'n".
I hear you on the distance. I have three pretty good suppliers within a 30 min drive, but the spectacular one is 1.5 hours away. I save it for a couple of times a year because I hate driving.
When I find a good source, I'm going to MINE that sucker, and buy enough for at least 4-5 builds. The Woodsmith guy had some really nice flame maple, PILES of it, and I just bought one board, enough for two neck through builds. It was cheap too..... sigh.
Can you contact the Woodsmith and find out who bought out his stock when he retired? It probably went somewhere local...
I live up in haverhill and go to highland hard woods in Brentwood NH. I know it is a bit of a drive but the last time I was there they had a good selection + you can save on the sales tax.
Apparently it was all sold at auction, including all the tools, so it pretty much evaporated, don't know to who. That's exactly who I was referencing about driving up to NH. Waze clocks it in at 120 miles and 2:25 driving time, which puts it 1 hour closer than Greenfield. I think I'm gonna schlep down to the one in Taunton first, and go farther afield as needed. Good excuse for a Road Trip. "Honey, let's go look at some wood!" She might skip that one.
All Righteous Woods Exotic hardwood exotics hardwoods burl burrs burls squares lumber Ebony Sorry looks like a name change was implemented.
Looks like even Alembic buys from them. Clients - Alembic Domestic Hardwood Buckeye Burl Bass Guitar 5 String 40 Who knows. When you go in, you have to go to the main lumber yard and ask someone to let you in. After that, they pretty much abandon you and if you need something I think you have to go back and ask them to cut or ring you out. I have noticed that they maybe a fine, but not really friendly. It is a pretty big room with a lot of different stock. Somone else here asked about Koa on a post, I have seen some there a couple of times.
Well, I was born and raised in Taunton. My wife says I say it this way TAHNT-en. By the way, I really enjoy reading your posts Beej and Gilmourisgod. FITZ.
