True that man. You can get rid of all the houses for free!

So Detroit is the worst city in the US?

Pound for pound i'd say yes. I can't think of any other large cities which are decayed and abandoned on the same magnitude as Detroit. Even the "good" areas of Detroit are awful.

The article said people are removing the dead bodies of loved ones from cemetarys in Detroit to the subburbs because of racisim???????? Anyway.........

I read a statistic that said Detroit has more abondaned buildings over 10 storys tall that any other city in the world..

Also the Mayor of Detroit Kwamme Kilpatrick is a complete idiot, crook, liar!

Before this currenty Mayor we had Dennis Archer for a few years, he did a decent job and brougt in the casinos and revenue to the city.

For 25 years before him we had Mayor Coleman Young.....he has to be the biggest piece of garbage as a mayor that ever existed. He stole a lot of money and ran the city into the ground.

What bothers me is the people of Detroit elected these idiots for the past 30 years that ruined this city! Aside from Dennis Archer who resigned after a few productive years on the job the other Majors have played a big part in destroying this city.

The major thing that non-Detroiters or people from outside the state of Michigan have to realize is that up till the 60's Detroit was on par with the Chicago it was a great beautiful city. Most of the folks for the subburbs had parents or grandparents that lived in Detroit back in the hayday. I seen old family pictures and the city was absolutley beautiful.

It's getting a little better but it is still a toilet, the worst city in the US....top 3 for sure!!! I haven't been to any worse.

It's rediculous that there are all these abonded homes that could be fixed up and solve some of the homeless problems that Detroit has (the same can be said for any city really) and nothing is being done. Granted there isn't always any money for it, but this is where shows like "Extreme Home Makeover" could step in. Help alot of different families by fixing up delapidated, possibly livable homes instead of ripping down perfectly livable homes and building a 5,000 sq. ft. mansion for a family, who although deserving of something, doesn't need that much.

This actually makes a good case for a new
    urban style 'Homestead Act'.

It is unfortunate that the city leadership does not have
the vision to plan an Urban turnaround, and the
gumption to put it in place.

A model turnaround was done in Providence RI, which,
20 years ago was a model of urban blight.

A combination of strong leadership and commitment to
renewal turned it into one of the nicest cities in the East.

    It can be done.

  12. It's real sad. I have lived outside Detroit for the last 25 years, we hear every time someone is running for mayor that they are going to step in and clean up Detroit. (Hurry up already.) The only way to clean up Detroit is to plow it down and rebuild. It's sad because there is so much history in the city and it really is a neat looking city. The music scene in Detroit is still really good there is a lot of good competition, still a lot of talented bass players.

Keepin' it real in Detroit for 25 years and counting! :help:

  15. Hey, that house looks familiar, I bet we've skated past that one before...

Just checking if any of you guys has actually been downtown lately? Or are you content to pile on without any first hand knowlege?

Lots of cleanup done for the Super Bowl, TONS of new condos/apartments/houses going up. Lots of buildings refurbished and/or torn down and rebuilt like Compuware and the surrounding area.

Yes, there are lots of abandonded homes and businesses remaining. I'm not even sure that they're building them faster than others are abandonded. But it is finally a race going on, instead of all going downhill, parts are finally going forward. Long way to go, no doubt. Lots of crap going on, absolutely.

But previous rebuilding efforts focused on a few buildings, once in a while. The Ren Cen, the Casino's, etc. Very small, localized efforts. Now there are houses springing up in lots of places as well, and multiple areas building up simultaneously instead of one at a time every 5 years. For the first time, its homes AND businesses, in multiple areas of the city at once.

This may still not be enough, but it is vastly different than previous attempts in previous years to get things moving again.

They're still doomed if they can't turn the schools around and get the budget and city govt under control, but its a fighting chance for the first time in 30 years. Business and builders are actually actively interested at the same time for a change. This is their best opportunity to turn it around in decades, hope Kwame gets thrown out before he blows it.

Yes, there is a lot of construction going on...for the Superbowl. After that's all over with, none of it will be maintained. Most of the painting and window replacements you see going on are just done cheaply and quicky so many of the visable downtown abandoned buildings look halfway decent.

Even rumors that cardboard cutouts of people and temporary lights will be placed in many abondoned buildings downtown for the Superbowl. The way a lot of people see it, the Superbowl is just going to show the world how bad this place really is.

There are new houses and condos going up though, but those are expensive and usually right downtown (and taxes in Detroit are extremly high). Most wouldn't pay that kind of money, espically when you look across the street to see more abandoned decayed houses and buildings everywhere.
