This is the Edsel of bass guitars. Fugly!
  12. as a new zealander who aspires to build a bass out of kauri in the nearish future.. how on earth can you disgrace such a beautiful wood as kauri like that?
  13. the wood is pretty. i think some larger, higher resolution pictures would really help to show the wood better.

However, the shape of the bass body is, how should i put this, unappealing. The pickguard and control plate hides a lot of potentially beautiful wood. but the biggest visual problem is that enormous strap horn and non-existant arm rest.

interesting? yes. Unique? absolutely. probably even has a great story from the builder too. maybe it plays wonderfully. i dont know. but i cant say i'm a fan of the looks.

edit: and it seems considerably overpriced.
  14. Jeez!

I was gonna say that it looks like that thing was hit, repeatedly, with the ugly stick but then it dawned on me that that IS The Ugly Stick!

Mr. Smith, we found your Alembic bass, but unfortunately it had been run over several times by one of our trucks.

    Wow- that is horrid.

Check out this site for a guy who builds basses and guitars in Auckland using Swamp Kauri. The website is about as cheesy as they come and apparently the builder isn't strong on grammar, but his stuff does display the beauty of Kauri.
