Im sorry if this topic has been previously covered numerous times but I have some questions on intonation I wanted to ask. First I dont understand if the intonation is supposedly based on string length why does the length vary. It seems that most basses that I see the strings get progressivly shorter ( E being longest and G shortest). This being the length from nut to saddle. The only thing I can figure is that since the E is thicker it is slightlly longer going over the saddle because of a greater angle. Also I tried doing some experimenting with intonation but I really did not notice any difference. Once the string was retuned it was in tune open and at the 12th fret. Any info on this woud be appreciated.
    Thank you
