Introduce me to the world of acoustic bass strings...

Discussion in 'Strings [BG]' started by The_Ryst, Mar 13, 2005.

  1. I need help. I'm a complete acoustic/electric noobie and I need advice for good, cheap strings. For my electric I use Ernie Ball Hyper Wound strings. Cheap, and great. When it comes to acoustic, I'm guessing the strings have to be different, so help me out please.

They don't have to be different. With a magnetic pickup, you have to have some steel in the strings, or they won't make noise. But, with an acoustic, you can use steel strings or strings without steel. If you have a piezo pickup in the bridge, you can use regular electric bass strings, bronze wound "acoustic bass" strings with steel or nylon core, or nylon tapewound steel strings. There are proponents of all these. Thomastic Infeld jazz flats, jazz rounds, and acousticores are favorites of some, LaBella tapewounds have fans, and all kinds of "electric" strings have followers. Field is wide open.
