So I'm not a huge "latest new thing" kind of guy and I really dislike the idea of giving money to Apple. However, I spent a couple of hours messing around with a friends new iPod Touch and that thing is freaking awesome! The only thing it lacks is mobile internet (which is a must have for me)...thus leading to the iPhone.

I was looking at getting a smaller tablet PC this next year, but the iPhone looks like it'd do the same thing for half the price and in a much smaller package. My question is, what's the monthly bill like for that thing with unlimited internet time and a reasonable amount of minutes? I'm more satisfied with Sprint's air cards than I am with Cingular's in terms of internet dead spots around town...any word on Apple opening up to other phone providers?

Also, I have a plan with Verizon and was curious if they have any phones that will do "real internet" the way the iPhone will? I looked on their site, but I wasn't really sure what I was looking at.

I have the iPod touch, and it does have built in wifi, so anywhere there is a wireless signal without a password, you can have free internet. I am amazed at the number of places I can get internet. So many people and businesses have wireless now that you would be surprised how often I can get on the internet with it.

I have a Palm Treo 755 and it does everything I need, including handling multiple email accounts. Might be worth a look.

Yeah, I understand that it has WiFi, but I need it to work on the road...not "Maybe if I can find someone's unsecured network."

WiFi isn't worth much when you travel, and it is worthless when you're in a car. You want something that accesses data over a built-in phone. That's the only way you'll have dependable service.

your gonna be looking at a $100 - $120 / month bill with unlimited internet depending on # of minutes you buy. I've been using PDA phones for about 3 years now .. i'm on my 5th one i think across 3 different networks: sprint / cingular / verizon. Right now I have a treo 700 (palm version) .. and it does everything i need.

Yeah the iPhone is cool .. I probably would buy one if it came over to verizon .. i know i'm not going back to cingular / att ..

for a first time user .. look at something like the motorola q, or the treo. the new samsung i760 is cool too, though bulky.

none will work exactly like the iphone does with the touch interface .. that's the cool part of the iphone .. it won't zoom in / out of webpages and let you navigate to different sections of them ...

i've like i said been using these type of phones for a number of years now .. my favorite's are the Treo .. they keyboard is awesome on them, and just fit in my hand the best. I don't use internet much on it, except for email. When I'm out and about i'll cruise news sites, that's about it.

The interface on the iPhone does look really interesting, but I also wonder how long that screen will resist scratches and damage. The Treo works fine for me. I tried using it without a screen protector but it started to get some scratching so I got screen protectors. Anywhere I travel, I know I can access maps to my destination, check weather, access email, etc. (Even check Ebay as needed...) I'm a business user and it works great. I'll upgrade my memory card from 2GB to 4GB soon and then see if I can't drop a movie or to onto it for when I travel by air.

Incidentally, I had been an AT&T/Cingular customer for 8 years before switching to Sprint when I got the Treo. The data service is perceptibly faster with Sprint. When people say AT&T's network data service is slower, they're not lying.

Right. That's what I'm saying. If all I needed was WiFi, I'd get an iTouch.

Yeah, it turns out that all the plans have unlimited data (email/internet) and the cheapest plan (with only 450 phone mins) is $59.99 plus probably $20 in other fees. I'd burn up 450 minutes pretty darn fast.

Since I'm signed up with Verizon, I just called them and the girl recommended the Voyager. If I don't want to have to change numbers I'm gonna spend $469.99 on one :eyebrow: If I change numbers it's only $299.99 :eyebrow: Thanks Verizon! You're the best!

Get Opera mini as your web browser. The newest version does all the neat iphone type web browsing with the zooms and such.

I have had a Windows Mobile phone with a touch screen for years (until my blackberry). It works ok with out a stylus.

how long have you been on your current contract with Verizon?

Right now they have a promo if you've been with them for a year, you can upgrade and extend your contract. That's what I did .. I bought a Moto Q when I went with them last fall, about 2 months ago I went in, extended my contract and got the Treo 700p for the new contract price.

Don't get the Voyager .. it's not a true smartphone, it just looks like one but is still locked with Verizon's standard features .. I don't think the Internet browser on it is that great either. Plus, there is no touch keyboard like on the iphone, there's only touch numbers .. for a touch keyboard you have to slide out the keyboard.

Yeah see I asked the girl about that because I've been with them for just over a year and she said I wouldn't get those prices until after 2 years...so next october is what she quoted me :meh:
