Iron Ether Nimbus - tone control mod?

Discussion in 'Effects [BG]' started by EthanTheHeathen, Dec 21, 2014.

  1. Hey smart pedal scientist types, do any of you know how one might go about adding a tone control to the reverb signal of the Nimbus? Is there even room for it? There's a lot to love about that pedal (the filter control is brilliant!), but I find myself wanting a darker, more mellow reverb a lot of the time, and this one is pretty bright.

I emailed Taylor at Iron Ether and it sounded like he'd thought of adding features like this to the Nimbus, but I think he's way too busy to move forward on new designs.

    Just thought I'd ask!

Actually I've already done this! It's now standard on all new Nimbi. It's not something that could be added by a third party because the filtering happens inside the reverb algorithm, within the feedback path; this way sounds become progressively more filtered as they bounce around in simulated space, as opposed to a static post-reverb filter which would not sound natural. So it requires changes in the software as well as hardware.

  3. Awesome!!! So is "bass" just a new name for the filter control?

    Thanks BFunk!

That's right, so with Treble all the way up, the new Nimbus works the same as the older version, and the Filter control is now called Bass for clarity. You can even do some dark drones by turning the Room Size and Bass all the way up to get near-infinite decay and then use the Bass and Treble knobs to slowly filter the drone's timbre over time.

  6. Well I'm impressed. And super excited to try out the new version! Any idea when they might be in stock?

Right now I'm building a batch of Subterraneas and then Nimbi and Polytopes will be next after that, so it should be about 2 weeks.

Any changes to the Polytopes? I love mine, but if you've got a new and improved version, I am willing to part with it.

No, I don't have any particular plans to change the other pedals for now. They are mostly pretty maxed out in terms of what can fit in that size enclosure and be usable. I think if there's ever anything added to the Polytope, it would have to be a special version in a bigger enclosure, and would exist in parallel with the current version, like a "Polytope Deluxe" - please note I am not announcing that as a real pedal! Ethan was actually right that I'm spending all of my time building, trying to keep the store stocked a bit longer each week, so no time for R+D at the moment.

Here is what the latest Polytopes look like:
