Is a hoffner style bass hollow or semi-hollow, and what's the difference?

  2. The Hofner 500/1 "Beatle Bass" is hollow. An example of a semi-hollow bass would be a Gibson EB-2. The difference is a semi-hollow has a block of wood in the center, generally from the bridge to the neck, and beneath the pickups, a hollow bodied instrument doesn't.

Or some basses are chambered, but the Hofner Violin bass is completly hollow, it is very noticeable in it's tone and weight.
