Is it just me or do "gui****s" just not respect basses. Just today the guy I play with kicked a water bottle right at my d-4:scowl:. And other times he (and others) will pick it up and do what they think is slapping (their version is usually much more abusive). Does anyone else have these problems?

It's jackasses that don't respect other's instruments. Their instrument of choice is irrelevant.

IMO most people that don't respect bass usually listen to a very limited selection of music, which is fine.

I just don't regard the respect of those players as high as some others.

    ymmv on this of course.

Can we all finally stop using the term "gui****" and come to terms with the idea that being a guitar player is not what makes a person an idiot but, rather, it's the fact that they started out that way?

Yes, there are plenty of guitarists who are idiots. I've met plenty of bassists who are idiots, too.

  5. Some of the guys I know don't respect bass 'cause it has 4 strings.. not 6.

  6. Not appreciating a good bass player is a good sign of someone who is not musically inclined.

If anyone disrespects my instruments or my gear, even if a concert pianist, they'll meet me in the alley.

Yes, please! I have to imagine that this term is really personally offensive to a good number of the people on this board, and it's especially silly considering we play the bass GUITAR.

I agree. The world is chock full of idiots. For brevity's sake--and out of respect for musical instruments--we can just refer to them as idiots.

  10. This. Fortunately, my guitar player is appreciative of the bass. A couple jam sessions back I was playing chords on my singer's guitar for a change, and after a couple songs he requested me to play bass again.

And as some said here, those who can't appreciate one instrument and its potential shouldn't be considered very knowledgeable/ wise in music terms.

  11. Can we still make fun of drummers?? Please!!

*New Version* Is it just me or do idiots who also happen to play guitar just not respect basses. Just today the guy I play with kicked a water bottle right at my d-4. And other times he (and others) will pick it up and do what they think is slapping (their version is usually much more abusive). Does anyone else have these problems?

If you avoid lower-caliber musicians, you'll also avoid those sorts. Not to mention, you'll be playing with a better quality of players, & elevate your own game.

Not anymore. My guitarists won't even touch my basses unless they're joking around, they know how bad they are at it. I played with one guitarist who would pick up my bass all the time and the only thing he could play was a completely butchered version of Too Many Puppies by Primus, he also gave me the "bass should be felt and not heard" speech a couple of times.

No issues like that in my band. If someone kicked something of mine or kicked something at something of mine, I know what I'd kick.

+1 to this. However I will say singers and guitarists are known most times (not all) for being the controlling and most egotistical of the bunch. If they are both the guitarist and singer oh man watch out! The whole no one cares about the bass player thing is just arrogance if you ask me.

There's that time-worn adage that respect is a two-way street.

If another "musician" doesn't respect your contribution to the band, then they are not worthy of either your respect or presence.

If I got that attitude, I'd be out of there in no time flat. Those sort of people don't deserve a bass player.

My guitarist treats my instruments with all the respect that I treat his,but we've been friends since we were three.there've been a couple of spills.he's kicked over my bass and I've kicked over his guitar, but no biggy. he usually doesn't even bother with my bass, because bass isn't very fun to him,but I'll occaisionally play his guitar in a very gentle and respectful manner.

At a gig today we were messing around with each others instruments (the entire band was). The guitarist was playing my bass, trombone player playing guitar, drummer playing trombone, vibes player playing drums and me on vibes. We all respect each other's instruments, so nothing goes wrong. We are also all talented enough to make music with any of the instruments listed above.

If I were to be in a band with and A-hole that didn't respect me or my property, I would walk.

Get to know better musicians in your scene, it'll make you better, and you'll avoid the idiots that have no respect for instruments other than the one that they are borderline mediocre at.
