Is Pain Good???

  1. when I practice bass, I like to finger my bass for as long and hard as I can, until I have to break pain barrier after pain barrier, until my hands are in so much pain im sweating. My hands are not recked after a some time, and I can keep playing without problems, it seems to me no real injury is being done, as I warm up with slow scales, and stretch my fingers and arms afterwords.
    Id like to know if any more experienced bassists can advise me on the usefullness and the harmfull consequences of this endurence excersise.

    Generally, you never want to play thru pain. It's okay to get to that point, but then you should take a quick cool down break before continuing again.

    Pain is only good if you're a masochist.

    Simply put, pain is your body's way of saying "don't do that!". So clearly, you must be doing something wrong. And while you might not sustain injury in the short run, you don't know now if something worse will show up later.

    Ergonomics are everything. You should have someone experienced give you advice between four eyes, or at the very least give us some more information on how you wear and play your bass. And could you describe your pains more specifically?

    Or is it just a matter of experience - how long have you played? Is your body still being uncomfortable with the unfamiliar task of playing an instrument?

    This is why you need a teacher - none of us, no matter how experienced can see what you are doing!!

    You could be doing something that is going to cause you problems and or serious, maybe even permanent injury!! :eek:

    One or two lessons with a good teacher and he/she could check that your technique is not going to injure you - no amount of talking or writing on here can determine that for certain!

    Although I agree with what has been said so far - pain is generally not good - but how bad, can only be determined by somebody, physically sitting in front of you and examining your technique!

    Real damage is being done, and it's cumulative and ultimately permanent. Like Bruce said, get a teacher. Poor technique will end your bass playing career prematurely.
  6. Thanks, ive been playing for about 5 years, only recently getting serious.

    I was just wondering if it was like sport, and getting painfully tired, a coach saying "play through though pain!!!", my fingers get they get real clumsy and slow. I dnt think its my style, I can play for hours wothout getting tired if I pace myself, just when I try as hard and as fast as I can for as long as I can. Ill take all your advice, get an experienced bass teacher... they are hard to find. I need a pro to teach me, and old cuban bassist.

    Very, very dangerous to your hands.

    You CANNOT look at this the same way as in sports. When you're playing bass, you're using only a few muscle groups, and relatively little-used ones, at that (in direct contrast to most sports).

    Pain is the body's way of telling you you're damaging it. If you're not careful, you could end up with any number of hand or wrist problems: tendonitis, carpal-tunnel syndrome, pinched nerves etc.

    If the pain is really curtailing your bass playing, I suggest going to a physical therapist or sports medicine specialist.
  8. If your hands hurt while playing the bass, then it sounds to me you need to work a little on your technique, mister..

    Try :

    - playing the bass in a different pose ( the plucking hand, try different angles on which your fingers approach the strings. Less flat on the body / more angled on the body. )
    - hang the bass higher / lower.
    - reposition the bass so that the pickups are not in front of your eh.. " pubic region ", but in front of your pocket ( sorry can't think of a better way to explain what i mean.. )
    - reposition the bass so the neck is less / more angled
    - etc.

    It took me at least 5 weeks of experimenting before i found the perfect pose(tm).
