I either pulled or tore something my chest today. It's been hurting since yoga Tuesday, it hurt real bad then. Wednesday I did yoga again with one of my friends and it didn't hurt too badly that time. Today I got on the climbing wall and it was down to a dull ache; I hung on with my right hand and went for a hold above my head with my left(it was a bit of a stretch) and my chest made a funny noise. It felt like some of the tendons? attaching my left pectoral to my chest pulled right off my ribs. I sat down for a good hour and a half and couldn't get up. After that I got some ice and then I could get up and walk around. It hurts to stand up, sit, move my arms at all, and even doing something like picking up an apple or yawning sends waves of agony through my chest. I can move both arms to some extent, and I can turn my head to where the chin is even with my shoulder. Please tell me all I did was pull something and I don't have to go to a doctor or muscle specialist! I don't have the money:(

make sure you have health insurance. Then go see a dr. That's what health insurance is for. if you don't have it, get it.

I am no doctor, but my mom is a nurse and my dad is a paramedic. I offer this advice:

If it hurts to stand up, sit down, or move and it took you an hour and a half to get up, it really doesn't matter if all you did was "pull something." Pain to that extent is NOT supposed to happen in your body no matter what you do. The longer you wait to see a doctor, the worse off you are going to be.

In my (non)professional opinion, go see a doctor NOW.

Ahh, well all the doctor's shops in starkville are closed until Monday now. It feels a lot better today; I can tell a definite improvement. I'm hoping it'll be gone by Monday, otherwise I'll try and find a campus health center or something.

    Dr Mulcahy reporting as ordered.

Be a little more specific. Exactly where on your chest does the pain originate? Is there a certain position of the arm or shoulder that are more or less painful than others?

My preliminary guess is either an injury to the pectoral muscle or to the costochondral joint (place where the ribs attach to the breast bone).

In either case, rest, ice and motrin are your primary steps.

Is Motrin basically the same as ibuprofen? Thanks!

It hurts on either side of my sternum; right in between my pecs. It feels like it's underneath the skin. I can't hold my arm straight out to the side of me, and holding them anywhere but down at my sides or relaxed on armrests is painful. Not nearly as painful as it was yesterday, but still painful.

Sounds more like a costocondritis. You probably irritated the rib joint a little. Follow the treatment above and avoid any strain for a few days. Should pass quickly.
