Is there any other way to date a neck besides serial number?

It looks like the neck I and many others think is a 59 P neck does not have a serial number anymore... it does however have an old pencil marking that says 1-59... it is said to be a 59 fender p bass neck by reputable sources, can the serial number be sanded off or dissapear etc?
