Is this a Fender?

  1. Yeah, that's the early 90's shape, affectionately dubbed "The Boner" bass.
  2. I don't think I would like the look of a boner strapped around a bass players neck.

So Fender have now dropped this shape and returned to the older shape I am more used to seeing?

    Too Close To Hell
These came out in 1989 (and IIRC lasted until 1994). They aren't popular. IMO, the price is too high, even taking into account the higher UK-market prices.

Yep, that looks like a 90's "boner" bass to me.
  5. note also the 22fret neck (although it's a bit unclear in the pic).
Nicky Wire of the Manic Street Preachers used to play a sunburst one like that.
(there's a Fender UK ad from around 95/96 which featured him with it- dumb as that particular model had long been discontinued by then  )
  6. Why did they change the upper horn from where it was to the "boner" look and back again?

Simple, they thought they could boost sales by making the instrument look different.

Of course, as the quality of the product didn't really improve and the old or "classic" design was changed, they probably didn't sell many of those...

If Fender would only stop trying to reinvent the wheel...
