This is a clip of Blink 182's Wendy Clear (yeah yeah they're not the greatest, but this is the first song I found with this "sound"), and its horrible quality because 1) I tried to keep the file small as possible and 2) because i'm a cheap ass and I don't want to pay for a music editing program. Anyway, I'm not too sure if this is an effect, I'm new to bass playing, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it is, and if it is, what is it. If you need a better quality clip, tell me, I'll do something about it. Thanks!

  3. Andrew - Your clip quality was fine for me. These Altec Lansing PC speakers and subwoofer I got to replace the crap that came with the PC really get decent fidelity and separation.

I used to use a very similar sound to what Hoppus is using there when I played punk exclusively in the 70's. A Fender Precision with some high quality roundwounds and an amp with some muscle and the EQ boosted on the lows and highs with the mids dropped will get you there with ease. No effects are needed by any means. That sound is very characteristic of a Precis being picked towards the bridge with the onboard bass turned up and the treble rolled back some. You get that bassy "grunt" and a lot of quick decay. A Rickenbacker can do it, too.

BTW, if you live in the US, (for shame - no profile info!), Blink is on The Tonight Show tonight, (Thurs). Also, what's the "dirty joke" their name is supposed to refer to??? I guess I'm just not hip.

The dirty joke is in the number 182, supposedly how many times Mark Masrerbated to Princess Leigha in her slave out fit from star wars.

  5. Thanks, Incu, now I actually feel hipper by not knowing......how about the "blink" part???

  6. It's not overdrive / distortion.. it's just the way the bassplayer plays.. it's the strings hitting the frets..

  7. Brand new roundwound stainless steel strings help too to get that sound. Play them really hard, too hard for them to survive a gig :)

Hey Rick, the Blink is just the original name of the band, the 182 had to be added because someone already claimed the name BLINK.

  10. Thans, Incu. Even though I'm getting to be an old geezer, that's no excuse for not staying interested in what's going on.

FWIW, I saw them on Leno last night.....the grand piano went with their sound like sauerkraut goes with banana ice cream

  11. to get that sound you just take a really nice amp a (ampeg svt) pretty nice bass (high end fender P) a pick and play like you just started off by simply beating the strings by the bridge so they hit the frets. click click click click:)
