Is this douchey?

  1. Hey there talk bass,

So the Australian bass player Dane Alderson happens to be in my town (Charlottesville, VA) playing gigs every Monday at a local bar. I hadn't yet seen him and his trio play (they're amazing by the way) and I really wanted to go. So much so, that I skipped out on band practice to go (I invited my guitarist and drummer, but they have an aversion to anything besides punk/alternative rock).

Anyway, I figured since it was just a practice it wasn't a big deal to miss it to watch an enjoyable gig. So, would any of you guys be upset if one of your band members missed a practice to go watch a gig (with virtuoso musicians) instead?

kind of. but then again, if cannibal corpse came to town, id totally miss practice to see them. you bring up an interesting dilemma.

Maybe if it became a habit, but in general, no. Each of us has had to miss at one time or another, for various reasons - as long as you're telling your bandmates what's going on, I don't think it's a big deal.
  5. Shouldn't this be in the new "Douchey?" forum?

Not a dilemma for me, as my band ( there's three of us) all dig the same stuff, so chances are if there is a gig in town, we'd all be going.

Hypothetically though...absolutely no big deal at all. Not in the slightest.
  8. If it was sprung on the band the day/night of practice, I'd say it could be douchey as this act is there every week - so a head's up should be given. Hopefully, you gave the guys a day or two's notice.

Actually the situation was a little stranger than that. So, the drummer's girlfriend was kind of acting up and at the beginning of the night practice was cancelled. I then got the call that practice was back on about 2 hours before the gig and at the time I thought the band I wanted to go see was playing there for the last time (I later found that they're playing next Monday too). So I figured seeing this band for their "last" show rather than going to practice (for a band that I am considering leaving) was important.
  10. giantimi,
Fair enough. You were told practice was off so you made other plans. My douchery call is off.

Not enough information to determine doucheiness.

    - Is there a gig coming up?
    - How often do you rehearse?
    - Are your rehearsals typically productive?
    - How much advance warning did you give?
    - etc
  15. I totally would. the band isn't your life. I have tons of fun at practice tho.

I skipped a rehearsal to see Primus in 3D earlier this year. Slept just fine that night.

"....they have an aversion to anything besides punk/alternative rock)."

Maybe you're in the wrong band?

Anybody who has an "aversion" to anything other than one kind of anything is a closed minded moron.
