I thought Jaco played fretless? How many basses had Jaco played? I rather bid for the one Jaco had touched with his finger , so it will cost much lesser. For that amount of money I' ll spent for few Sadowsky and Fodera basses.
The article from the Guitar magazine says, "Jaco seen here with his fretted 1960 jazz bass".. he did own one, and the article mentions that his famous one, the fretless was a 1962.. I guess this is the fretted 62.. Hmm its either authentic, or the guy took an exacto knife to an already aged bass and cut out exact replicas of the pics from the magazines included.. Wow, if I had 20 grand lying around.. I'd buy a car
If I had $20,000 lying around, My car I own would of cost $100,000 & I'd own that bass. But I don't have it lying around.
Well...let's see here. I just happen to have a copy of Joni Mitchell's Shadows and Light DVD (I got it for my birthday a week ago) and it has some great Jaco footage. So, time for me to take a look. I have just watched Jaco's solos, Amelia, and Pat Metheny's solo, so I'm gonna take a better look now. I'll be back with my report.
Well, it's kinda hard to say from the video. His bass is definitely fretted, there's no question. There are only about 3 shots of him, and on the best one there is, there's a frikkin' mic stand in the way of the lower pickup. The video shows the flanged wear on the left side of the bass, but it doesn't show the ring, I guess, of wear 'n tear right where the sunburst changes from black so the varnished color, but that could have changed since the video. If I had the bass I would keep it, or donate it to a Jazz museum, but if any sick freak would be selling a fake like that, I dunno, he's sick.
Jaco played a fretted bass a lot more than you would think. I have several bootleg videos of him in various groups and he played fretted probably as much as fretless. His fretted tone sounded real similar to his fretless. This looks to be real to me.
I believe the guy who offer this bass will sell the authentic one, but I believe the one who are willing to pay 20,000 would like to see the bass with his own eyes before bidding it.
Bill. Bill Milkowsky I'm sure bill would appreciate the correction. He might even be a lurker, who knows?
Is this for real? Nobody's really given evidence suggesting either way. Personally I think if that's a fake...it's a pretty good one. Looks like it to me.
But the catch is this is about collectors. Remember Clapton's guitar, "Blackie"? If this is really his fretted J it won't be going for the price of an upper brackets Alembic
