Is this is stupid idea...or is it pure genius?

  1. Ever since I've heard about the Audere preamp, I've been wanting to try it out...but I don't have a jazz bass, and really don't want to invest in something high end (like a Sadowsky).

    So -

Rondo Music has an SX 5 string jazz bass copy for $130. Drop in an Audere pre-amp and shape tone like never before for under $400 total (yeah, I know...preamp costs more than the guitar...but I recently played a 5 string Squire jazz that someone put Barts into - the Music Go Round wanted 179 for it. As soon as I put it down, an older gentleman picked it up and bought it without even playing it - yep, it was THAT nice!)

    Thoughts?

  2. i have an sx jazz 5'er with the audere pre. it kills! before you decide on the sx i should warn you that the stock string spacing is very tight and you'll need to deepen the control cavity by a bout 1/8 inch or so, maybe more. i put a badass V on mine and widened the spacing to the widest allowable by the neck and it mad a huge difference.

i love the bass now but i might upgrade the pickups later.

  3. Thanks for the heads up!!

Might have to just try that one of these days. I'd be looking fretless, so the tight string spacing isn't really an issue as it would be with a fretted.

Nice Bene! Good luck with the sale!

That's exactly what the Audere is for, IMHO - to make a fairly decent bass (like an SX) sound ten times better!

And on a Jazz style bass (like the SX 5), it's a pretty simple install, too. In fact, I think I'll be doing the exact same thing to my SX in the near future...

I say go for it & let us know how it turns out! Good luck!
