I thought Ken had this thing against maple boards...if this is legit, this would rock (or, at least, funk!). http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...Track=true&ssPageName=VIP:Watchlink:middle:us Z
Headstock is different from the ones on the site and I do not see that model in a 6 on their site. -My first 30 second diagnosis would be: bogus On the other hand, I am not at all kamiliar with KSD's and have never even played one. I have just looked at their models on the site a couple times. So for all i know it may be a custom. Bottom line: don't trust me -Steve
yep, that appears to be the new KSD 6, I saw the proto @ last year's NAMM and it had the same J body with the traditional Smith headstock design so this must be one of the new ones. as for Ken's 'thing' about maple boards... I'll have to read up on that but this one looks like it's trying to be the Marcus 6 nice looking bass though.
I also saw this and it caught me by surprise!!! I emailed KSD sales with the link and asked them if it is real.
even if this is legit... i do not buy basses on ebay.. never have never well... i buy em here.. music go round... or another TRUSTED retailer...
not really, I was at NAMM and saw the Rosewood(or pao ferro) version of that bass. that is the KSD 6 with the KSD headstock that was on the NAMM one I saw.
wish it had a jazz style headstock like the 4's and 5's....not really feeling the black traditional ken smith headstock on the jazzz body. still cool though.
I have seen these before. Usually in the sunburst finish so this is the first look at the natural and pearl finish.
http://www.basscentral.com/2003/ksd.shtml And they've been making Maple board KSD's for a while now. Apparently the six is under a grand brand new.
The reason I posted this was I was saving up for a custom-made "middle of the road" bass so I don't have to take my high end one out to the smoke bar (especially the one where the condensation from the AC drips from the ceiling by the end of the night). First thought was another Brice, but a custom-made (black, neckthru, maple board & 34 scale) and I could upgrade the electronics). Brice sixers are quite adequate for such use. However, the custom upgrades and eq would run me about a grand, and I'd only have to spend a couple hundred more for the custom I've been talking to a luthier about. I've always lamented the fact that the Marcus doesn't come in a 6, so I was excited when I saw this. The new headstocks apparently are legit as per the Bass Central site, and if I can do this for around 900 new, I'd have a splendid Christmas gift to me to celebrate my 35 years of playing bass. The thing that kills me about the ebay listing is the $100 shipping cost! Thanks for the thoughts! Z
I absolutely love the way these things look!(more notably the sunburst/rosewood ones) I wish there was more info about them and perhaps more reviews.
This certainly doesn't help Ken Smith's case saying he only lends his name on the product but now his headstock is on one! Go figure! Knowing how heavy KSD's are, this thing must weigh a ton! Honestly, a Jazz bass with that headstock is ugly, IMO.
Agreed, I think the KSD traditional headstock married to a J-style body has a really interesting look about it. It's unique. Besides a 6-inline headstock would not only look weird but it would be tedious to change strings or quickly tune up on stage.
The headstock is also one of the things I like about it. String sets with particular string tensions are set up so that the more tensile strings are the 3rd and 4th put an even pressure on the neck of the guitar. I like the Smith headstock on the Ken Smith models, but don't like the bodies...they're just a little too large for me. The jazz bodies with a Smith headstock make them unmistakably Smiths.
